2002 Martinelli "Zio Tony Ranch" Russian River Valley Syrah
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is dense purple-colored with a big, floral nose intermixed with hints of bacon fat, blackberries, creme de cassis, camphor, and graphite. Full-bodied, dense, and chewy, this wine is probably best drunk during its first decade of life although, since there is no real track record on how these wines age (certainly its high alcohol of 16.2% is going to keep it stable for many years to come).
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Saturated ruby-blue to the rim. Penetrating, primary aromas of blackberry, violet, gunflint and game. Superripe but primary and juicy, with bright fruit flavors framed by adequate acidity. Still a bit liqueur-like, but this shows much better balance than the Hop Barn Hill example. Not yet complex, but this very promising syrah should be a fascinating wine to follow as it evolves in bottle. 92(+?) points.
A dark, dense, concentrated wine, with layers of spicy black cherry, wild berry, blackberry and nutmeg. Well-structured, intense and focused, with lively acidity and firm tannins, it shows off a beefy side on the finish....
