Smooth Ambler "Old Scout" 10 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1133137

Remember that wonderful 14-year-old marriage of various LDI casks our friend John Little released a while back? The latest version of that small batch is finally here. The Old Scout 10 year old is another vatting of whiskies (all 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley - the same as the 14 year) that brings the richness of a high-corn mash. The standard Old Scout uses the high rye recipe for a more herbaceous note, but the 10 year is a bit sweeter. Don't let that fool you into thinking this is a supple spirit because at 100 proof the OS 10 year brings the spice and the power. There's a peppery note on the entry with some tea-like nuances before the barrel spice kicks in and blasts the back end, ending with a bit of banana. The aromas brimming with pencil shavings and wood oils. For the folks who appreciate the power and the intensity of the Willett Single Cask bourbons, this is another whiskey in that vein. Another quality expression from Smooth Ambler, I am now in the habit of getting excited for their new releases. In a world of diminishing stocks and shortages, it is wonderful to have some older, and quality, expressions available to us. Ok, on to the brown stuff. Spices and graham cracker waft out of the glass, a soft aroma of vanilla adds a nice base to the nose, straight forward and enticing. The palate is sweet and supple; the corn adds a very nice roundness without making it flabby. My first impression was that of dried orange peel and creamy hazel nuts. There are hints of darker spices to give it back bone, clove, anise, leading into a soft finish of vanilla and pepper. Overall a quality Bourbon that is sure to please those of us in need of something with a decent amount of age on it.

A good rich style of Bourbon with the concentration and mouth-feel that only a good amount of time in wood can bring. I thought that just a touch of water brought out more stone fruit characters with sweet spices and peanut brittle. Good stuff at a very fair price!

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
