Bodegas Tradicion Oloroso VORS Jerez

SKU #1131447 96 points Wine & Spirits

Given the age of the stocks (some more than 45 years old), this wine has amazing fruit presence. While Tradición hones to a dry style for its wines, this bottling has a certain voluptuousness and fruitiness that’s unusual in wines of this style. Youthful and complex, it deserves time and patience when you open the bottle, a wine of meditation, one to accompany late night conversations about changing the world. (2/2014)

The single vintage wines are different, but they are not necessarily better than the solera wines. In fact I preferred the Oloroso VORS to the two single-vintage; I found it more complex and fluid, while the single vintages were more concentrated and powerful, but not as nuanced. I’m talking about the NV Tradicion Oloroso VORS, on average 45-50 years old, which gives the wine a concentration of glycerin and dry extract that is amazing. Silky, very interesting to see the wine that has been blended over the years is more complex. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, it is full-bodied, and still follows the same, clean, elegant, precise line of the rest of the wines from Tradicion. Drink 2013-2025. (LG) (8/2013)

K&L Notes

Founded in 1998 by construction magnate Joaquín Rivera, Bodegas Tradición focuses exclusively on very old Sherry. Having come from a family with deep roots in the region and the Sherry business dating back to the 17th century, Rivera did not set up the bodega as a profit making enterprise, but rather purchased old soleras from the likes of Domecq as he wanted to ensure their survival, and by extension the continuity and cultural import of his home town's most famous industry. This VORS Oloroso is, in a word, stunning. Buttered pecans, toffee, candied orange, yellow cake batter, dried coconut and other lovely nuances reveal themselves on the nose, all leading to a palate of candied citrus, grilled nuts, and the classic walnut husk note of a properly aged, distinguished Oloroso. While this is not inexpensive, it is worth every penny and may even be, pound for pound, the very best wine I have tasted all year. (Joe Manekin, K&L Sherry buyer)
