El Segundo Brewing Co. "Citra" Pale Ale, California (22oz)

SKU #1128145

Praise from Geoff Dyer in the Wall Street Journal: "My wife took our chilled glasses from the fridge (we were in California, had gone all frosty and native). We opened the bottle and did as the label instructed: 'Pour vivaciously into your favorite tapered glass.' We sniffed—yep, this sucker smelled liked beer all right—and we tasted. It was amazing. The hops gave it a bottom, but the citrus aroma sent it 'jumping out of the glass,' just as the label claimed. All of this was evident in the first gulp. Beer is different to wine in this respect. Excellent wines often take a while to yield their charms. Not beer. You can tell a great beer right away. So we got ourselves on the outside of it in no time... It might have been nice to have sipped the Citra rather than gulped it down, but that was not the mistake. The mistake, as they say here, was not getting a crate of this stuff." (05/2014)

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
