2001 La Spinetta (Rivetti) "Campe" Barolo
A rich and decadent wine with plum, berry and grilled meat on the nose. Full-bodied, with big chewy tannins and a velvety texture. Long and rich. A beauty. Best after 2008.

Saturated ruby. Huge nose of toasted oak and super-ripe sweet fruit that defines this producer's wines. The 2001 Campe is massive on the palate, revealing layers of sweet dark fruit, licorice, tar, menthol, and spice flavors, with excellent sustain, finishing with broad and long tannins. A beautiful wine made in a very modern, extracted and super-ripe style. 2001 is the first vintage in which Giorgio Rivetti had complete control of his Barolo vineyard at Grinzane Cavour, and it shows in the much improved quality of this wine over last year’s version...drink after 2009, tasted 05/05. Full medium red. Aromas of graphite, rose petal and gunflint. Plump and full in the mouth, but also highly aromatic, thanks to its floral and mineral components. Still, this rather saline, dry, serious Barolo is a bit youthfully aggressive today, and much less obviously sweet than Rivetti's Barbarescos. Finishes with building tannins. Very promising young Barolo, from chalk-rich soil similar to that found in Gallina and Starderi. 92(+?) (ST)
