2010 Château de Saint Cosme "Valbelle" Gigondas

SKU #1093759 97 points Wine Spectator

This is a backward brute, with a wall of roasted bay leaf, cedar, alder and juniper guarding the core of black currant, fig, prune and plum notes. Heady and dense, but there's plenty of cut on the finish, with a grounding rod of charcoal and singed iron keeping everything upright and focused. Best from 2015 through 2032. 708 cases made. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Composed of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, the 2010 Gigondas Valbelle saw some small new oak barrels during its upbringing. There are about 700 cases of this cuvee compared to the 3,400 cases of the classic Gigondas. One of the vintage’s most profound wines, the 2010 Valbelle exhibits an opaque purple color along with copious notes of black raspberries, creme de cassis, incense, forest floor, spring flowers and subtle underbrush and earthiness. There may even be a hint of black truffles in this complex, full-bodied, massively endowed Gigondas. Neither heavy nor ponderous, it is a brilliant example that should drink nicely for 15 years. 93 points Vinous

Vivid ruby. Heady, spice- and floral-accented aromas of candied dark berries and cherry, with a bright mineral overtone. Rich but energetic on the palate, offering sappy blackberry and cherry-cola flavors that show excellent clarity and lift. Fine-grained tannins give shape and grip to a long, smooth, penetrating finish. (JR) (1/2013)

K&L Notes

Winemaker Louis Barroul, who took over Château de Saint Cosme from his father in 1992, is the 14th generation of his family to care for this esteemed estate. So it would probably be fair to say that these wines are in his blood. The Gigondas wines all come from the 15 acres planted around the Château. The Valbelle is unique in that it is 90% Grenache and 10% whole cluster Syrah from five different 80-year-old vineyards that are cofermented--the disparate ingredients mingling into one like mama's sauce. The 2010 is stunning--on par with great vintages like 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2007--but with a slightly more reserved profile that encourages aging. Currently showing incredible wild raspberry, white pepper, garrigue and pencil lead notes on the nose and palate. Firm structure and fresh acidity. 14.5% abv.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
