2009 Torrin "The Maven" James Berry Vineyard Paso Robles Grenache
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
(75% grenache and 25% syrah; 16.2% alcohol): Inky ruby. Black raspberry and boysenberry on the assertively perfumed, spice-accented nose. Juicy and expansive on the palate, displaying sappy red and dark berry flavors and notes of candied violet and Indian spices. Emphatically rich but vibrant for its size, finishing with excellent thrust and length.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Grenache-based 2009 The Maven is a very beautiful wine. Dark red cherries, anise, tar, French oak and smoke are layered together in this intense red. Waves of fruit continue to flesh out on the rich, textured finish. The 2009 shows good intensity and freshness in a medium-bodied style for these sites. The blend is 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah, 60% from James Berry and 40% from Torrin, fermented with 20% whole clusters. (AG)
A rich, graceful style that packs in lots of dark berry flavors, with mocha, spice, cedar and raspberry. Firms nicely midpalate, with gripping tannins and a long, lingering finish. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2020.
