2010 Malmaison, Moulis

SKU #1067118 92 points James Suckling

Aromas of blueberries and minerals follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a caressing finish. Very finely crafted. Gorgeous wine from here. Better in 2015. (2/2013)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(an 80/20 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon): Bright, dark red. Cassis and mint on the classy, youthfully medicinal nose. Juicy and on the lean side but intensely flavored and sharply focused, with bright acidity framing the red berry and licorice flavors. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry, with a strong spine of acidity. This very solidly built merlot-dominated wine should put on weight with a few years in the bottle. (The property is owned by Baron Edmond de Rothschild.) (7/2013)

Wine Spectator

Forward, with a floral hint and fresh, polished plum and cassis notes. A modest dose of toasted vanilla shows on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 6,600 cases made. (Web Only-2013) (JM)

K&L Notes

Elegant on the nose and quite grippy on the palate. This property has been doing well lately.

Another great value under $20! We have sold out of this before and just received another small batch. Elegant on the nose and quite grippy on the palate. This property has been doing well lately.
Top Value!

The '10 Malmaison has that perfect balance of oak spice, ripe fruit, a firm grip and just that perfect hint of earth to give it that extra layer of flavor you rarely find in a bottle at this price!

Soooo, I was wandering through our employee purchase hold area in our store and I noticed that Ralph had purchased a half of case [don’t worry Ralph, I won’t tell Kim] of this puppy. And, I asked him, “Why did you purchase this lovely wine.” His response was basically to tell me that, like me, he was also older, and that he couldn’t buy wine anymore wine that needed to be aged and would outlive him. My response to that was “Red wine keeps you alive!” This is a wonderful 2010 and very definitely near-term. Medium –deep ruby in color, this Gem is loaded with upfront, soft, round blueberry to truffles notes in the nose that carry over nicely to a high-profiled, fairly powerful, yet well-integrated and soft palate impression. The finish is long and satisfying with Rusty telling me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for the next few years. 14.0% ABV

Elegant red cherry cola, chocolate and red currant. Medium plus acidity and medium plus tannins make this a wine to decant and enjoy with a steak! Delish!

This was very nice at the UGC in Bordeaux, and we just poured it for the staff and it has settled into itself very well. In Bordeaux the oak spice was dominant, and it was showing more red raspberry. Now the wine on the nose is showing floral, spice and ripe red fruit. The palate is more layered, with rich, ripe raspberry, finishing with lifted brightness.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
