 Lanessan's 2001 is a consistent overachiever in Haut-Medoc. This wine nearly rivals the outstanding 2000. It is a seriously-extracted, dark ruby/purple-colored offering with ripe cassis fruit, notes of leather and earth, and a hint of truffles. It is medium-bodied, pure, and savory, with copious tannin. A delicious wine that is perfect right now. Great cassis aromas follow to palate, which is soft, elegant and lingering.e. A steal for less than $20. This, and a rack of lamb would be heavenly.

Between this vintage and the 1997, I can’t make up my mind as to which one I absolutely like the best. The problem, here, is that I love this Bordeaux vintage. It is a classic great vintage to me. But the 1997 is so superb to drink now, it is hard for me to decide. Read my description of the 1997 and apply it to this Gem. Rusty has indicated that this production will be one of our house reds for however long it is around. 13.0% ABV

If you are looking for a Bordeaux that is mature and drinking well now, the 2001 Lanessan is good choice. It has a nice and interesting aromas of a classic Bordeaux. In the mouth, it has wonderful fruit that is balanced out with earthy flavors and ends with a nice dry finish. The 2001 Lanessan will go well with beef or pork and is a steal at only $19.99.

I'm stoked (that's Californian for "psyched"). We have a good chunk of this vintage of Lanessan and, for my money, it is the tastiest vintage of the several we have featured recently. I have some 1999 in the cellar and now I will need some 2001 to complement it. Here you will find expressive, pure, red cherry fruit coupled with warm earth. For a taste of what traditional Bordeaux once was then you should buy this wine. A way under-priced bargain. BARGAIN.

For lovers of Bordeaux looking for a guilt free, everyday claret. Drinking beautifully at 10 years of age. Value priced at under $20. Lovely ripe red fruits - tart currant and sweet cherry. Wonderfully savory. Enticingly spicy. Good concentration, persistence and length. Spot on.

This was by far the biggest hit of the tasting judging by how much we sold (people were grabbing full cases). By now our customers know how much we like this property, and this is drinking well right now. The nose is cedar, spice, anise and black fruit with a bit of damp earth/mushroom in the back. The palate is integrated with cassis, blackberry, spice and earth. The wine has a long finish with bright acidity at the end. Lovely.

Showing a dark brickish color that denotes a more developed character. A very elegant nose of sweet coffee, plums and a touch of pepper. Soft tannins, and very much ready to drink. All in all it’s a bargain for what it offers.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
