 The 2006 Giramonte (Merlot, Sangiovese) is a very pretty wine made in an opulent, full-bodied style that nevertheless retains a surprising level of freshness and precision. The tannins build on the finish with notable power, suggesting a few years of cellaring may be needed before the wine starts to hit its stride. This is a beautiful wine from the Frescobaldi family. Bordeaux in Tuscany? In our recent staff tasting, Clyde seemed especially fond of this. Pomerol-like, with rich aromas of black and blueberry compote, vanilla cream, and toffee. In the mouth this wine is incredibly smooth and lush, with fine, smooth tannins, subtle minerality, and a long finish. A lot of wine here, it will age beautifully over the next decade.

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
