 A new discovery for me, the 2007 Cotes du Rhone (a 4,000+-case blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise) is a seriously built, concentrated, powerful effort displaying notes of garrigue, pepper, lavender, kirsch, and black currants. It also exhibits that wonderful seaweed wrapper (nori) scent that seems to be a characteristic of many southern Rhone wines. (RP)  (10/2009)

Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape sits this 88-acre estate, owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe (in Châteauneuf). The cuvée Baron Louis is a special assemblage from select parcels with vines between 50-90 years of age. The 2007 is a blend of 40% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault and 10% each of Carignan, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Aging takes place over 12 months in small oak barrels. A step up in intensity and length from the regular Côtes du Rhône, the Baron Louis can be enjoyed now, however it will be superb with several years of additional cellar time. Try it with heartier fare like sirloin steaks dusted with fresh herbs.

We have been directly importing the outstanding Rhone Valley wines of Chateau de Montfaucon since 1995 and, although many of you know the story of this property, I think that it is still appropriate to repeat. This 85+ acre estate lies across the Rhone River from the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and its red and white wine grape make-up are similar to what goes into making CDPs. The problem, however, is that the river is the appellation line and Montfaucon, therefore, cannot be called CDP, and is relegated to a general Cotes du Rhone classification. My attitude is that if it smells and tastes like CdP, than treat it like CdP. With that out of the way, I can tell you that the 2007 Cotes du Rhones from Montfaucon are the best that I have tasted from this estate since we have been importing them. Produced from the older sections of their vineyard (60- to 90-year-old vines), the Cuveé Baron Louis(40% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault and 10% each Carignan, Mourvedre and Counoise) would be a great and classic CdP if wasn't for that #*&^ river. With its deep, richly appearing hue, the opulent, perfumed nose of blackberry, purple plum, white pepper spiciness, hints of smoked meats and forest floor explodes from the glass. It is concentrated and lush, with broad fruit in the mouth that is complex yet soft and round, with silky tannins, all leading to a long, warm, ongoing finish. I plan to lay this Gem down for a few years to give it additional development, but it is an amazingly wonderful wine now, particularly with decanting and airing {10/13/2009}...A K&L WINE MERCHANTS' DIRECT IMPORT... ***** 14.0% ABV ***** {RETASTED 07/13/2017: Has become absolutely incredibly delicious; comparable to any $150.00 or much more older wine available in our stores}

The word ‘nuance’, from the verb ‘nuer’, to show variations in shade, is much abused in winespeak, but for those bottles that have been allowed to evolve gracefully over a decade or more, there is no better term. We recently had the opportunity to explore nuance to its full expression during a memorable winemakers’ dinner with two of our favorites, Rodolphe de Pins of Chateau de Montfaucon and Jean Baptiste Meunier of Moulin de la Gardette. Full of boundless appetite, Rudi shared his robust, enduring wines as freely as his endearing conversation, and by the end of the evening everyone was, to say the least, sated. With ten long years under its belt, the 2007 Baron Louis was remarkably smooth, mouth-filling and harmonious, with fleshy blue plum, bramble and redcurrant flavors burnished by sous bois, sandalwood and fine tannins, finishing with a soulful, warm flourish. Pure pleasure, don’t hesitate to rediscover this wine again and again. It is very nuanced.

I'll start here: This wine is criminally under-priced and outright delicious. It's full of black and blue fruits, white pepper, leather and dehydrated herbs. The estate is situated just to the west of Chateauneuf du Pape and year after year I become increasingly impressed by the quality and length of the wines. I had a chance to revisit this particular bottling a few months ago and it reaffirmed my assertion that this is one of the best values in all of the Rhone.

A recent visit to Montfaucon in the appellation of Lirac, led to a deep cut tasting of some back vintages. Always a pleasure with the charming Rudi and Mari des Pins! A HUGE standout was this 2007. From a renowned vintage, they held back many a case to be released at a time when it would have advanced to its ideal drinking window. This wine is spectacular with its fleshy blue fruit, layers of savory spices and fine mineral edge. When they offered us some cases, we jumped at the chance. You won't find a better merging of aged wine and price as well. Ten years of age and just shy of $30! How can you pass it up?

To be honest, yes, I do have a bias for Ch. Montfaucon. I buy magnums when they are available. This 2007 is a great little wine at a fantastic price. It has that little extra something, even in a great vintage such as this. Dark cherry and red plum fruit. It fills out mid-palate and has a nice, spicy finish. Extremely versatile for almost any meal. Perfect for Fall foods! It will also age well for the next 5-7 years.

2007 Cotes du Rhones are my go-to wines right now and the "Baron Louis" from Montfaucon is hands down the insider trading secret of the vintage and region. This cuvee could easily stand up to the big boys in CDnP but fortunately for us, cannot legally be called so, and therefore comes to us at a steal of price!

To me, the 07 Baron Louis is tight and restrained now, not really showing its full potential, and that's on purpose. I recently openened a bottle of the the '98 and it was simply beautiful. Mature and developing aromas and flavors were seamlessy woven together and framed with lively acidity, the '98 was a dead-ringer for aged Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I expect the 07, considered to be another great, if not superior vintage, to be another one for the cellar. Drink the regular Cotes du Rhone from this producer today and over the next couple years; lay a case of the Baron Louis away to have on hand 5-10 years from now. Trust me.
