From a new Mendocino appellation called Yorkville Highlands, the 2001 Pinot Noir Weir Vineyard (493 cases) possesses an austere structure along with notes of sweet and sour cherries, sassafras, chocolate, and balsam wood. Medium-bodied, with a distinctive cool climate personality as well as a tannic finish. All things considered, 2001 and 2002 are the finest back-to-back vintages I have tasted from Williams-Selyem. Good medium-deep red-ruby. Crystallized red and black berries, cola and bitter chocolate on the nose, with hints of sandalwood and earth. Rather tough and closed today in the middle palate, with a strong oakiness. Finishes with brooding tannins and lingering notes of chocolate and game. (ST)
Some will like the distinctive coffee, cola, menthol, cherry candy and mineral flavors, and the rather heavy, thick mouthfeel of this tannic wine. It should soften up with a few years in the bottle.
Dense and earthy, with a fresh forest floor flavor underscoring the rich tannins and blackberry flavors. Flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Best from 2005 through 2009. 490 cases made. (Web-2004)
Weir Vineyard is an experiment in Mother Nature’s winemaking.
