2001 Antinori "Solaia" Toscana
The 2001 Solaia is similar to the 1999, but with an added level of finesse that takes the place of some of the brute power found in the 1999. The 2001 drinks well better young than the 1999, but it is also likely to mature earlier. (AG)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep, dark sensations of smoke, tar and scorched earth emerge from the powerful 2001 Solaia. This fresh, vibrant offering is packed with dense ripe fruit. This is an especially rich, heavy style of Solaia that lacks the subtlety and grace of the finest vintages. Still, in 2001 Solaia is a more complete wine than Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. (AG)
Masses of coffee and blackberry character in this youthful wine. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, loads of fruit and excellent wood. Big and juicy, with a long, long finish. A fine wine. Needs time. Best after 2007. (JS)
Cabernet Sauvignon, with 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. Very dark crimson. Sweet and round Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich, long, tannins brilliantly managed. There's a streak of refreshing spearmint here, a hint of quinine. Intense, pungent and very complex. Very long. 18.5/20 points.
