Scharffenberger "Brut Excellence" Mendocino County Brut Sparkling Wine
*Editors' Choice* This wine shows amazing complexity, subtle richness, layers of flavor and an ultrasmooth texture. A foundation of fruit flavor is very solid, and the acidity is firm and refreshing. The mouthfeel is plush and the finish lingers, making it a grand wine for a special occasion. (JG)
Honest autolysis and a very fine, creamy mousse set this moderately rich sparkler on solid champenized footing, and its youthful energy comes as a plus. It does not cheat to sweetness and is balanced to firmness after feigning slight softness at entry, and, if a wee touch of late-arriving bitterness holds it back from higher marks, it is a solid basic Brut all the same.
Crisp and tightly focused, with modest notes of citrus, green apple and spiced cinnamon. (TF, Web-2016)
One of the San Francisco Chronicle's Top 100 Wines of 2013: "Winemaker Tex Sawyer keeps pulling off the extraordinary: fine Chardonnay (two-thirds of the blend) flavors of Bartlett pear and fig with a toasty character, almond and mandarin orange, in a wine that's remarkable for the money. Opulent, classy and a true credit to the skill this Philo-based house has often displayed. Disgorged January 2013."
