Connoisseurs Guide

 Honest autolysis and a very fine, creamy mousse set this moderately rich sparkler on solid champenized footing, and its youthful energy comes as a plus. It does not cheat to sweetness and is balanced to firmness after feigning slight softness at entry, and, if a wee touch of late-arriving bitterness holds it back from higher marks, it is a solid basic Brut all the same. Not far from Roederer is a little homegrown brand: Scharffenberger. Established in 1981, the winery has gone through a couple of ownership changes (remember Pacific Echo? Me neither). Under the current ownership quality from this 120-acre property has shot to new heights. In contrast to the Roederer, the NV Scharffenberger Brut sees 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is comprised of 2/3s Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay. There is a fruity richness with hints of plum, roasted apples and cinnamon.
