Scharffenberger "Brut Excellence" Mendocino County Brut Sparkling Wine

SKU #1011906 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Dry, appetizing and complex, this wine has intricate aromas of butter, almond and toast followed by mellow fruit flavors, lingering spices and a suave texture that seems to encourage the long finish. It’s light to medium-bodied and excellent in overall quality. *Editors' Choice* (JG) (12/2017)

90 points Wine & Spirits

This is a gentle sparkler, its pleasantly sweet fruit cushioning the brisk undercurrent of lemony freshness. An easy wine for toasting friends or celebrating a birthday. (12/2017)

Connoisseurs Guide

Fresh and explicitly yeasty from the very first sniff and a little richer and deeper from start to finish than most of its comparably priced competition, Scharffenberger’s very frothy, finely bubbled Brut Excellence is a nicely composed expression of the Champagne Method that earns an appreciative nod for both quality and value. It lacks for nothing in the way of fruity brightness and bounce but is not compromised by coarsening, overly obvious acidity, and, even though enjoyable on its own, it will find a welcome place at the table with dishes ranging from trout amandine to chicken filets napped in creamy sauces. *Good Value* (12/2017)

Wine Spectator

Creamy and lively, with festive apple and spice flavors. (TF, Web-2017)

K&L Notes

One of the San Francisco Chronicle's Top 100 Wines of 2013: "Winemaker Tex Sawyer keeps pulling off the extraordinary: fine Chardonnay (two-thirds of the blend) flavors of Bartlett pear and fig with a toasty character, almond and mandarin orange, in a wine that's remarkable for the money. Opulent, classy and a true credit to the skill this Philo-based house has often displayed. Disgorged January 2013."

Not far from Roederer is a little homegrown brand: Scharffenberger. Established in 1981, the winery has gone through a couple of ownership changes (remember Pacific Echo? Me neither). Under the current ownership quality from this 120-acre property has shot to new heights. In contrast to the Roederer, the NV Scharffenberger Brut sees 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is comprised of 2/3s Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay. There is a fruity richness with hints of plum, roasted apples and cinnamon.
