1998 La Croix du Casse, Pomerol

SKU #1009169 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

La Croix du Casse remains an unheralded, but high-class source of rich, concentrated Pomerols. An outstanding effort, as well as one of the sleepers of the vintage, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 exhibits ripe, jammy notes of blackberries and cherries intermixed with licorice, smoke, and new wood. Full-bodied, with terrific fruit extraction, considerable muscle, and moderate tannin levels, it is not a wine to gulp down over the near-term. (RP) (4/2001)

Wine Spectator

Plenty of blackberry and dark tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and a vanilla, toasted oak and berry aftertaste. (JL) (1/2001)

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
