2000 Sean Thackrey "Orion" St. Helena Rhône Blend
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The blockbuster 2000 Orion, which I assume is virtually all Syrah, possesses an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of liquid minerals, acacia flowers, blackberry liqueur, and graphite. Full-bodied, with tremendous intensity, purity, texture, and precision, this fabulous wine should be uncommonly long-lived .... 12-20 years. (RP)
Deep ruby-red. Pungent aromas of crushed raspberry, pomegranate, eucalyptus and minerals. Juicy, spicy and very intense but dry and tight, even a bit lean. Conveys a slightly feral character, with black fruit flavors complicated by a meaty quality and some roasted oak. The savory finish shows a touch of dryness. This wine's dark, fresh color and high-pitched aromatics suggest that it's still young... (ST)
Ripe and juicy, with intense vibrant red cherry, plum, licorice and bay leaf flavors. Turns complex, with spicy flavors and firm, integrated tannins.
Not labeled as Petite Sirah, but included in the tasting based on Dr. Carole Meredith’s analysis of the vineyard. Winemaker Thackrey doesn’t necessarily agree. The wine itself is big, bold and black, with strong eucalyptus elements... Richly textured, with firm tannins and a long finish that bodes well for aging.
