1999 Saddleback Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Tight, chunky, firmly tannic style that slowly reveals itself, offering layers of complex earthy currant, mineral, sage and rich earthy tannins. Needs cellaring. An underappreciated wine from a veteran winemaker, Nils Venge, who understands Napa Valley Cabernet and consistently offers excellent quality.
As a proven Napa Valley winemaker for over 20 years, Nils Venge is widely recognized for his attention to detail and personal supervision of the winemaking process from vine cultivation to bottling. He is reputed as being one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon makers in the Valley, producing big, opulent wines which have tremendous cellaring potential. He was the first American winemaker to ever receive a score of '100' from Robert Parker, Jr. in The Wine Advocate magazine for the 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1999 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is rich, deep, concentrated and lush with flavors of spice, cedar, mint, clove and black currants. Shows well now but will improve in a cellar over the next 7 years.
