We've split the list into three sections. First we show a limited number of our top picks for the week. Next, we display all new arrivals coming into our inventory for the first time. Finally, there is a list of old wines and items we've sold previously that have just returned to our inventory.
TOP PICKS...
(a handful of our favorites also listed in the New Arrivals and Back in Stock sections)
- 2008 Gemtree "Tadpole" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia
($10.99)
An untamed animal with minimal intervention (that means no filtering, no fining, and pretty much no hand of the wine maker in evidence whatsoever), this is a naturalist's dream: 100% juicy, soft and drinkable Shiraz in a fruit-forward, jammy and yet balanced style. A fantastic value and a lot of bang for around ten bucks. "Since I became aware of this property last year, I have been extremely impressed with the quality and value they have to offer. James Halliday, who is one of Australia's foremost wine writers and founder of the Coldstream Hills winery added them to his list of ten 'dark horses' to watch. The grapes are grown organically and since 2008 they have become 100% biodynamic. For every bottle sold, they also donate to Greening Australia which supports the wetlands on their property. Last year the Wine Spectator gave their 'Uncut' Shiraz ($19.99) 92 points and it made the Top 100 list, and by the way, we recently were able to procure another dollop of this fine wine. The Spectator also awarded 90 points to the 2007 Tadpole, and I'm here to tell you the 2008 is even better. For a wine at this price, it shows remarkable concentration with a perfumed nose of blueberry, blackberry, iron, crème de cassis and a hint of milk chocolate. On the palate the wine is rich with good acidity and silky tannins that present superb balance and length. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration." (Jim Chanteloup, K&L Australian wine buyer)
- 2004 Montviel, Pomerol
($27.99)
According to Robert Parker: "This elegant, medium-bodied Pomerol exhibits sweet cherry, dried herb, and earthy characteristics along with good fruit, purity, and overall balance. It is a straightforward, one-dimensional offering to consume over the next 6-7 years." (06/07) According to the Wine Spectator: "Lots of blackberry and dark chocolate on the nose. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity, silky aftertaste. Refined and delicate. Best after 2009." (Web only, 2007) Chateau Montviel was purchased in 1985 by Catherine Pere-Verge (Chateau Le Gay). It is located at the North-West corner of Pomerol and spans 5 hectares whose average age is 30 years old. The soil is a fine sand-gravel mix, much like Clinet, with deposits of iron. It is this soil combination, typical of Pomerol, that gives the wines their unique blend of elegance and power. Michel Rolland is the consulting oenologist.
- 2007 Climens, Barsac
($149.99)
99+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted twice at UGC tastings, it was actually under blind conditions that the Climens 2007 re-confirmed its status as the best Sauternes of the vintage. It retains an ethereal bouquet of honey, white peach, apricot and orange-blossom with ethereal purity and joie de vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with exquisite balance and essence of mineralite. It balances on tiptoe with perfect acidity that effortlessly counterpoises those layers of rich honeyed fruit; the finish taut, vibrant and with a sense of place. This is outstanding in every way. Perfect? I would not bet against it deserving that loaded adjective one day in the future. Drink 2015-2050." (04/10)
- 2006 E. Guigal "La Landonne" Côte Rôtie
($279.99)
97 points Wine Spectator: "This is packed for the vintage, with dark bittersweet chocolate and espresso leading the way for the core of dense fig paste, hoisin sauce and mulled blackberry fruit. The long, smoky finish lets charcoal and iron notes play out, with a very grippy finish. Best from 20120 through 2030." (Web Only 2010) 96-98 points Robert Parker: "The 2006 Cote Rotie La Landonne may merit a three digit score by the time it is bottled. A dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary bouquet of burning embers, espresso roast, black currants, blackberry liqueur, and pain grille. With aeration, bacon fat and licorice characteristics also emerge. The sweetness of the tannin, the extraordinary intensity of the flavors, and the remarkable finish suggest this is another legendary effort from Marcel Guigal and his son, Philippe." (04/09) 94-96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Smoky cassis and mulberry on the nose, with licorice and incense notes adding complexity. Impressively concentrated and energetic, offering sweet dark fruit flavors and notes of bitter cherry and violet pastille. As deep as the Turque but more expressive, with strong finishing minerality and persistent sweetness and spiciness." (Jan/Feb 2010) 13.5% abv.
- 2006 E. Guigal "La Mouline" Côte Rôtie
($279.99)
95 points Wine Spectator: "Very perfumy and alluring, with lots of espresso, sandalwood and black tea notes all mingling together, while velvety crushed plum, fig and blackberry fruit glides in behind them. Hints of mesquite and iron play out on the well-integrated finish. Accessible, but will cellar easily too. Best from 2011 through 2032." (Web Only 2010) 94-96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Youthful ruby. Intensely floral scents of raspberry, blackberry, cinnamon, allspice and smoky minerals. Open-knit red and dark berry flavors are strikingly pure and underscored by a tangy note of blood orange. Extremely fresh wine with excellent finishing thrust and mineral-driven persistence. With air this became even more floral and picked up subtle tannins; I'd bet on it being very attractive in its youth." (Jan/Feb 2010) 92-95 points Robert Parker: "The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Cote Rotie La Mouline exhibits gorgeous notes of plum pudding, espresso roast, black cherry jam, and caramelized, exotic fruits. Full-bodied, fleshy, velvety-textured, and silky with superb richness as well as a sumptuous mouthfeel, this is a tour de force of hedonism and complexity. It should provide immense pleasure over the next 20+ years." (04/09) 13.5% abv.
- 2006 E. Guigal "La Turque" Côte Rôtie
($279.99)
96 points Wine Spectator: "This pulls together grip, minerality and fruit, with charcoal and espresso laying the foundation, supporting crushed plum, fig sauce and mulled currant fruit, which then gives way to a vibrant, iron- and tobacco-filled finish that leaves a mouthwatering feel. Very impressive. Best from 2011 through 2030." (Web Only 2010) 95-97 points Robert Parker: "The exquisite 2006 Cote Rotie La Turque may or may not be as good. It exhibits exceptional aromas of bacon fat, smoked duck, soy, black currants, blackberries, and graphite. Full-bodied and dense with good acidity, outrageous concentration, and a finish that lasts over 60 seconds, this is amazing stuff!" (04/09) 93-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Expressive, perfumed aromas of red berry and cherry preserves quickly retreated with brief aeration. Deeply concentrated dark fruit flavors slowly reveal notes of spices and candied flowers as well as chewy tannins and a late peppery quality. The finish packs a punch but is pretty undifferentiated right now. It will be interesting to see if the vivacity that this showed last year returns after bottling." (Jan/Feb 2010) 13.5% abv.
- 2008 Bollig-Lehnert Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Kabinett
($15.99)
93 points Wine Spectator: "A white of intense minerality and salinity, with peach, passion fruit and lime flavors accenting the stony core. This is sleek, beautifully defined and enlivens the palate with its crisp acidity and wet rock evocations. Fine length." Best from 2012 through 2022. 350 cases made."
- 2008 Bodegas Volver Tempranillo La Mancha
($12.99)
90 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Volver is also 100% Tempranillo sourced from 50+-year-old vines and aged for 14 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it showcases aromas of pain grille, earth notes, spice box, and fragrant blue and black fruits. Supple-textured, super-ripe and concentrated, on the palate it is mouth-filling, savory, and structured enough to evolve for 2-3 years. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 8-10 years. It is a great value that over-delivers in a big way." And
