JS98 & JS97: High-Scoring Southern Italian Duo - Quintodecimo & Montevetrano - 02/02/2018 - Italy

While Tuscany and Piedmont get the lion’s share of the attention when it comes to Italian wines, that certainly doesn’t mean other regions aren’t producing top-tier efforts. Take for example the stunning 98 and 97 point reds from Montevetrano and Quintodecimo. This pair left James Suckling awestruck with him noting the Montevetrano is “one of the best vintages in years!” His review of the Quintodecimo is equally as enthusiastic, skipping from superlative to superlative before landing on: “Need I say more?” A mic-drop if there ever was one. Full-bodied, fleshy, and expressive, both in their own way beautifully capture the unique terroir of Southern Italy. Make no mistake, these aren’t the overly rustic Southern Italian reds of old, rather they are sleekly styled, urbane and, above all, graced with impeccable poise. As the huge press highlights, these are truly world-class efforts that stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and beyond. Unlike their counterparts from these big named regions however, their prices a very approachable. Those who have enjoyed past vintages of the Quintodecimo and Montevetrano will definitely want to stock up as these are glorious bottlings that will reward for many years to come.

97 points James Suckling: "What an incredible nose of iodine, ink, explosive violets, crushed stones, stems, brambles, blackberries, oyster shell and cedar. Full body, incredibly grainy and dusty tannins, vibrant acidity and a fruit-forward but wonderfully minerally finish. So seamless yet dense at the same time. Refined and juicy. Need I say more? Delicious now but better in 2020." (10/2017)
