A Trio of 98-Point Brunello Powerhouses - Early Champions of a Charmed Vintage - 01/18/2018 - Italy

While the final reports on the 2013 Brunello vintage are still trickling in, what we can say with absolute certainty is the that the top wines are profound efforts that are destined to charm collectors for decades to come. The 98-point bottlings from Renieri, Altesino, San Polino show, with absolute clarity, the brilliance this vintage can achieve. Common to all is freshness, unremitting intensity, and a structured foundation that is the hallmark of age-worthiness. With a more linear approach, than either the 2011s or 2012s, the โ€˜13s will have strong appeal for those who are more taken by traditionally styled Brunello. That being said, the top โ€˜13s are never lacking when it comes to fleshy fruit and layered complexity. They are transcendent efforts and will appeal to just about any red wine lover. The San Polino "Helichrysum,โ€ a previous 100-point wine, is made in minuscule quantities and is one of the most collectible bottlings in all of Brunello. Altesino, for its part, is one of the most recognizable and revered names in the region, having introduced numerous innovations that ushered in a new era of winemaking. As for Renieri, they own some of the most coveted holdings in the southern quadrant of Montalcino, and have really captured the attention of critics and collectors in recent vintages. These three properties are among the top names in Brunello and have once again proven their standing with these remarkable 2013s.
