A Trio of 98-Point Brunello Powerhouses - Early Champions of a Charmed Vintage - 01/18/2018 - Italy

While the final reports on the 2013 Brunello vintage are still trickling in, what we can say with absolute certainty is the that the top wines are profound efforts that are destined to charm collectors for decades to come. The 98-point bottlings from Renieri, Altesino, San Polino show, with absolute clarity, the brilliance this vintage can achieve. Common to all is freshness, unremitting intensity, and a structured foundation that is the hallmark of age-worthiness. With a more linear approach, than either the 2011s or 2012s, the โ€˜13s will have strong appeal for those who are more taken by traditionally styled Brunello. That being said, the top โ€˜13s are never lacking when it comes to fleshy fruit and layered complexity. They are transcendent efforts and will appeal to just about any red wine lover. The San Polino "Helichrysum,โ€ a previous 100-point wine, is made in minuscule quantities and is one of the most collectible bottlings in all of Brunello. Altesino, for its part, is one of the most recognizable and revered names in the region, having introduced numerous innovations that ushered in a new era of winemaking. As for Renieri, they own some of the most coveted holdings in the southern quadrant of Montalcino, and have really captured the attention of critics and collectors in recent vintages. These three properties are among the top names in Brunello and have once again proven their standing with these remarkable 2013s.

2013 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($69.99)

98 points James Suckling: "Spectacular aromas of dark fruits such as cherries with undertones of peaches and orange peel and some floral character, too. Full body, layered and rich. Lightly chewy tannins. Incredibly long and flavorful. Makes you want to drink it now but it will age beautifully." (11/2017)

2013 Altesino "Montosoli" Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($79.99)

99 points Wine Enthusiast: " Enticing aromas of ripe berry, chopped herb, new leather, tobacco and a whiff of eucalyptus all mingle together on this gorgeous, vibrant red. The stunning, savory palate boasts juicy red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and star anise while firm refined tannins and vibrant acidity lend structure and balance. Its already extraordinary and elegant but also young and primary, so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2023-2043. (KO)" (05/2018)

98 points James Suckling: "Opulent aromas of plum, dark berry, flower and sandalwood. Full body. Dense yet vivid and energetic. Wonderful exotic character and intensity. Great finish. Drink in 2021." (11/2017)

97 points Vinous: "Good full pale ruby-red. Knockout aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minerals, complicated by hints of iris and violet. Extremely suave and polished on the extremely long, pure, mineral finish. Deeper, richer, more tannic and longer than the lovely 2013 Brunello Classico from Altesino, this is an absolutely beautiful Brunello. I especially like that the pristine, refined aromas and flavors of the famed Montosoli site are showcased to maximum effect here. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage. (ID)" (04/2018)

2013 San Polino "Helichrysum" Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($79.99)

97-98 points James Suckling: "This is an impressive wine with blackberry, currant and spice. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. A rich and structured young Brunello. Try in 2021." (11/2017)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: " Alluring scents of ripe plum, tobacco, underbrush, fragrant blue flower and a whiff of new leather set the tone. The taut tightly-knit palate delivers juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and baking spice framed in bright acidity and a backbone of assertive, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2023-2038. (KO)" (05/2018)
