V93-95: A “Classic” Rendition of One of Burgundy’s Most Celebrated Wines - 12/22/2017 - White Burgundy

Consistently among the most coveted and collectible Burgundies is Henri Boillot’s absolutely thrilling Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos de la Mouchère.” Regardless of the vintage, this superlative bottling stands out for its precision, expressiveness, and impeccable balance. Earning a potential score of 93-95 points from Stephen Tanzer, the 2016 version is poised to stand among the best ever from this domaine - including the much heralded vintages of 2005, 2009, and 2010. This 2016s as a whole are showing brilliantly with the "Clos de la Mouchère" as a delightful bellwether of what to expect from the vintage. A melange of orchard fruits, honey, apricot, it possesses excellent weight and depth. As with previous top vintages, it has the potential to age for 20 years or more. Burgundy collectors won’t want to miss out on this exceptional effort. Yields are down significantly in 2016, so there isn’t a lot of the “Mouchere to go around making this the best opportunity to secure your bottles.

2016 Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos de la Mouchère" (Pre-Arrival) ($109.99)

93-95 points Vinous: "(13.3% alcohol with 4.5 grams per liter acidity; cropped at 38 hectoliters per hectare, from vines up to 80 years of age): Bright light-medium yellow. Utterly pure scents of stone fruits, apricot, nuts and honeysuckle. Rich, deep, silky and moderately saline but also powerful and backward, displaying terrific precision and purity in the mouth. A superb, classic Clos de la Mouchère: utterly plush and seamless without being heavy or over the top. Boillot noted that he will slowly replant these very old vines in a series of tranches over the next 15 to 25 years. (ST)" (09/2017)

K&L Notes: 95pts Jasper Morris (MW): "Untouched by the frost, after protection with braziers. Pale lemon colour, soft and generous nose. A very complete fine wine, lovely minerals behind, lively, enough concentration, a trace of fine reduction on the palate. Exceptionally good." (01/2018)

2010 Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos de la Mouchère (Pre-Arrival) ($149.99)

95 points Vinous: "Bright pale yellow. Soil-driven aromas of grapefruit, fresh dill and flinty minerality. Dense and brisk on entry, with outstanding grand cru intensity to the lemon and crushed stone flavors. Conveys a strong impression of silex. This boasts the sappiness of the best 2010s and finishes with outstanding stony, citric persistence. Like a slap in the face today, this wine demands at least several years of bottle aging, at which point it may merit an even higher score. (ST) 95+" (09/2012)

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is slightly riper and notably more complex than the straight Puligny villages but the aromatic composition is similar save for the trace of mineral reduction that is present here. The racy, intense and strikingly well-delineated flavors possess that really lovely sense of underlying tension that adds lift to the stony, linear and bone dry finish. This is a knockout. *Sweet Spot. Outstanding*" (06/2012)
