Licia Albarino - 09/21/2009 - Spain

If you have $12 or less to spend on a white wine, give this a shot. It's already started flying off the shelves, even before we shined a spotlight on it.

2007 Licia Albariño Rias Baixas, Spain ($11.99)

92 points Wines & Spirits: "The fresh flavors of this wine fall between nuts and fruit, hinting at loquat or kumquat. Its mouthwatering acidity has the briny character of sea spray. Harmonious in the middle, quiet and lasting in the end, this is a luscious white for Dover sole." (8/09) The 2007 Licia shows the benefit of an extra year in bottle for good albariño; ripe red apple aromas lead to a mouthful of rich, round, yellow stone fruit, some tell tale albariño smoky granite tinged minerality, and a hint of salinity on the finish which is amazingly fresh and invites you to take another sip, or, more likely, a gulp. Drink this chilled while you wait for your skewers of chicken, shrimp, meat or veges to finish up on the grill. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)
