Must-Have 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Papes from Domaine de la Janasse - 03/24/2017 - Rhone Valley

In his recent review of the 2015 Janasse bottlings Josh Raynolds of Vinous states:

“As usual, Janasse has produced some of the most powerful, full-flavored wines of the vintage as they manage to pull off the difficult trick of smoothly melding richness and energy. While the Vieilles Vignes bottling gets the most attention of collectors, the old vines Grenache-derived Chaupin has recently been performing at a level very close to its big brother, albeit in a more elegant guise, and that's definitely the case with the 2015. It's also worth noting that the entry-level bottling here is one of the very best values from the appellation, and it's a wine that ages wonderfully.”

We couldn’t more aptly describe these wines ourselves. Consistently among the most heralded producers in all of the Rhone with a proven record of crafting 100-Point masterpieces, Janasse has a reputation that rightfully proceeds itself. The 2015 vintage in the Rhone is among the best in recent memory, which as we had hoped gave the team at Janasse the materials to produce some of their finest bottlings. Whether they ascend to the level of the legendary 2007 and 2010 vintages remains to be seen, but unlike those bottlings, these can be purchased now for significantly less. The trio of CDPs list below are available via pre-arrival and are among the best prices you’ll find for these legends-in-the-making. While we were able to secure a solid allocation given the glowing reviews and the large following Janasse commands, we don’t expect these bottles to last long.

2015 Domaine de la Janasse "Tradition" Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) ($44.99)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape sports a medium ruby color as well as perfumed notes of strawberries, currants, dried herbs and dried flowers. Elegant, medium to full-bodied and polished, drink it on release and over the following decade. One of the finest run estates in all of Châteauneuf du Pape is Domaine de la Janasse, which is managed today by the brother and sister pair of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Looking at the 2014 and 2015 releases, both lean towards the more finesse-driven end of the spectrum, with Pinot Noir-like textures and less overt concentration than past vintages. Thats certainly expected in a vintage like 2014, but is surprising in a vintage like 2015. While the estates reds, both Châteauneuf du Papes and Côtes du Rhône, are well known, dont make the mistake of missing their whites, as these are some of the most impressive and age-worthy wines in just about every vintage. Its also worth noting the new Isabelle Sabon Clos St Antonin releases, also reviewed in this report. This is a new estate located just beside the Plan de Dieu and they release four cuvées: one white and three reds." (10/2016)

90-92 points Vinous: "made with 30 percent whole clusters and aged in a combination of concrete tanks and barriques) Bright violet. Vibrant, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry scents, along with hints of candied lavender and anise. Seamless and focused on the palate, offering energetic cherry and red berry flavors that become spicier and deeper with air. Finishes vibrant, sweet and quite long, featuring a resonating raspberry note and a hint of fine-grained tannins that sneaks in slowly." (03/2017)

2015 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) ($64.99)

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is also slightly lighter in color than normal, yet offers a beautiful bouquet of crushed flowers, kirsch, black raspberries, spice and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless, it shines for its purity and balance. Its worth noting the estate is playing around with more whole cluster inclusion, and this cuvée was 40% not destemmed. 93-95 points Vinous: "40 percent whole clusters; raised in foudres and demi-muids) Lurid violet. Heady aromas of candied red fruits, spicecake and minerals take on suave floral and garrigue qualities in the glass. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sappy raspberry, cherry liqueur and spicecake flavors and hints of lavender pastille and blood orange. Silky tannins add shape to the extremely long, juicy finish, which leaves an intensely perfumed floral note behind. Many of these vines were planted in 1912." (03/2017)

95 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty, with cassis and warm raspberry puree notes carried by silky but persistent structure, while rooibos tea, blood orange and incense accents fill in the background. The streamlined finish pulls everything together, letting the silky, perfumy feel sail on. (JM)" (07/2017)

2015 Domaine de la Janasse "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) ($89.99)

97 points Wine Spectator: "Ripe and focused, with a delightful mix of cassis, blood orange and cherry coulis flavors streaming through, backed by black tea and apple wood accents. Finely beaded acidity lets the fruit stretch out, while a light mineral edge adds range. Shows an echo of licorice snap at the very end. Dense, but theres remarkable grace here. (JM)" (07/2017)

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes checks in as 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault, with 30% whole cluster. Its ruby/opaque color is following by terrific notes of cassis, cracked pepper, licorice and distinct minerality. Full-bodied, concentrated and with building tannin, it shows the more finesse-driven style of all of the 2015s, has fine tannin and a great finish. 94-96 points Vinous: "(made with 20 percent whole clusters and aged in concrete tanks and demi-muids) Dark ruby. Ripe, smoke-tinged cherry and blueberry compote aromas show excellent clarity, and a peppery element adds spicy lift. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering densely packed yet shockingly lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of star anise. Shows superb energy on the broad, seamless, strikingly long finish, which is firmed by supple tannins and sharpened by a kick of juicy acidity." (03/2017)
