The Surprise Return Of A Favorite Vintage Champagne - 03/18/2017 - Champagne

Vintage Bonville is one of the jewels of our Champagne selection at K&L, and never lasts very long. This allocation is the most special one that we have yet received, as it comes from a lost lot, direct from the family’s caves in Avize. We thought that we had exhausted the supply of this two years ago, but after Bonville sold out the 2010, and was just about to start on the 2012, they found 600 extra bottles of the 2009 deep in a forgotten nook. On first release in 2014, this all mid-slope, estate grown, Avize grand cru Chardonnay Champagne was fantastic - with lots of meyer lemon zip and precise chalky drive. The wine still has this incredible freshness, but the extra time has given it a creamy texture and a compact bead on the level with the most expensive bottles that we have. This is one of the top wines of the ripe 2009 vintage and, according to our Champagne Buyer, Gary Westby, would show well to even wines as famous and expensive as the 2009 Cristal. 2009 Franck Bonville "Millesime" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne ($49.99)

Franck Bonville today is run by Olivier Bonville, the great grandson of Franck who acts as the proprietor of his family's estate. With 20 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Avize, Oger, Cramant and Mesnil, Bonville's wines are made entirely from Grand Cru-level Chardonnay and therefore labeled as Blanc de Blanc. Their wines always have a wonderful richness balanced by an incredibly chalky minerality that pierces through the Chardonnay flavor. The standard Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc is one of the most popular and successful wines in the history of K&L, a perpetual customer favorite that our Champagne shoppers come back to time and time again.

Franck Bonville is one of our most popular producers of Champagne that we offer here at K&L. Their 2009 vintage of Blanc de Blancs fails to disappoint. Lemon curd, roasted Brazil nuts, and nectarine play wonderfully with an upfront and pleasant chalky minerality. Slight creaminess on the palate, though it finishes crisp and fresh. Minerality really comes through, as does lemon zest and golden apple pastry. This Champagnes elevated acidity lends it to being an ideal choice as an aperitif or pairing with hors doeuvres (especially shellfish). Easily one of my favorites!

One word, WOW! Tasting this champagne is an experience not to be missed. The flavors are intense and in sync with the acid which dances on your tongue. The finish stayed with me long after the champagne was gone. I just cant get enough of this one! This may sound silly but I actually got goose bumps.

I have not had a Champagne form Franck Bonville that is not well crafted and delicious. The 2009 is no exception to this experience. It has the nice aromatics of a Bonville Champagne, is nice and dry, and has nice medium body. It is layered and shows a lite touch of round mid palate flavors.

Yeasty with caramel notes right from the top, the 2009 "Millesime" Brut is every bit the toasty, mineral-driven Champagne weve come to love from Bonville, with the added accessibility of a rich, easygoing vintage. While the extra time on the lees really comes through, this still a bright Blanc de Blancs with tiny mousse, lemon and green apple fruit, and a clean yet lingering finish. This is an incredible addition (Grand Cru! Avize!) to our Direct Import lineup.

It really made my day when our buyer Gary Westby informed us we had a special batch of the 2009 vintage from my favorite Grand Cru Avize producer, and that it had been aged on the lees an extra two years! The fruit is broad and rich on the palate, with lemon, honey and marzipan, with a creamy toastiness and impressive levels of crisp acid and chalk. Great richness and depth while retaining remarkable freshness and drinkability. A true feat of craftsmanship!

This is a beautiful example of how a vintage Champagne can showcase both the richness and brioche qualities of an aged sparkling, with the brightness and minerality that balance it so well. Personally, I am a fan of younger Champagnes, as I tend to shy from the nutty quality often found in older ones. I found this Bonville to be the best of both worlds with the vibrant fruit shining through and the yeasted creaminess adding body and structure. This is one that will appeal to every Champagne drinker and will be welcomed at any occasion.

Sometimes you need a miracle during the month of March and sometimes Someone hears you and you get Champagne that was aged longer than intended. Well that has happened, one of our favorite DI, Bonville, from champagne has found some 2009 that was aging in his cellar for longer than usual. What happens when an amazing producer has his wine age for an extra two years on the lees? Pure magic my friends. This wine has length and plenty of minerality and drive with a beautiful dry finish. However, those extra years add a richness and roundness that is absolutely delicious. Seriously this is good.

I just tasted this a few minutes and boy, what two added years on the lees will do! It still has that Franck Bonville snap of acidity but, it has a wonderful, white flower nose with an underscoring lushness of white and yellow fruits with vanilla, cream and brioche notes. One of the best vintage Franck Bonville's that I have ever had. Enjoy!

We have found a hidden treasure! I couldn't be happier that more of this incredible vintage was found hiding at the winery. The extra few months on the lees has added complexity, weight and longevity to the bright and lively blanc de blanc. The 2009 vintage is known to be richer and more full bodied than previous vintages, but I've found this champagne to be full of fresh acidity and a younger profile than excepted. An easy wine to enjoy now with the ability to age!

We drank a bottle of this last night while closing the store, and I was surprised at just how good this Champagne showed. This has the focus and snap of many 2008's, and an incredibly long, mineral driven finish. Most of the 2009's I have had have been much broader and lower in acid than this all Avize Grand Cru super star. While it is showing great now, I think this has a lot of potential for the future!
