Best-Seller Reload - Sub-$13, 2015 Rhone Value From A Top Estate - 03/15/2017 - Rhone Valley

Back in November we offered 2015 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône and the response was fantastic with the wine selling at a more than impressive clip. It became immediately clear - when it comes to delicious everyday reds you simply can’t have too much of a good thing. If you missed it the first time around or were looking re-stock there’s no better time than the present.

Saint Cosme has a sterling reputation as one of the few Southern Rhone producers to notch a 100-point score outside of Chateauneuf - clearly a testament to their winemaking prowess. The team at Saint Cosme applies that very same attention to detail to all the wines in their portfolio, which is clearly in evidence in this delightful 2015 Rhone red. Made from 100% Syrah, it is fresh and expressive, loaded with notes of wild blueberries, blackberries, and raspberry coulis. After the initial rush of fruit, secondary notes of wildflower, slate, and a touch of exotic spice emerge. Some dusty tannins trail into the long finish adding structure and a pleasant textural element. It’s pretty amazing that a wine so gorgeous and with this much character can be had at such an affordable price. We’ve been loving the 2015s Rhones we’ve had thus far with the Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône at the top of the list in the value category. Don’t miss out on this great bottle of red you’ll want to come back to time and again.

2015 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône ($12.99)

91 points Wine Spectator: "#43 Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2016!! Ripe, with vivid blueberry and boysenberry fruit, harnessed on the back end by a bold graphite edge. Anise and violet notes add range. Drink now through 2019. 25,000 cases made. (JM)" (11/2016)

K&L Notes: It's unusual to see 100% Syrah coming out of the southern Rhone but this has become one of the signature wines of prestigious Gigondas producer Chateau de Saint Cosme. The fruit comes from the Vinsobres appellation in the northern part of the southern Rhone and the terraces of the Villefranchian subregion on the Gard side of the Rhone River. Imbued with the full flavor and richness that Syrah provides and from this exceptional 2015 vintage, you can't go wrong with this pleasing and intense French red.

"It's got to be more than flesh and bone, All that you've loved is all you own."- Tom Waits, Mule Variations. For this boy, Waits and a good bottle of wine go down well, especially in these uncertain, strugglin' times. And Saint Cosme has been making great wines in the Southern Rhone since 1490, through hard times and good, dedicated to the land and what it will give you if you love it well. This smooth, well-defined 100% Syrah captures the superb 2015 vintage, all the freshness, texture and intensity of the blueberry, blackcurrant fruit refined by exemplary tannins and a solid, nourishing-to-the-soul finish. Priced to sell, so he who waits, well.....

Cosme has always been the Rhone for people who wanted something more than just juicy bistro wine. This is the Cotes du Rhone with depth, and dark fruits, and leather, and spice, and hints of black pepper. It's almost like a Northern Rhone wine and a southern Rhone wine combined into one. The syrah really comes through in this baby and it's a wonderful thing.

Perhaps one of the most surprising of the Côtes du Rhône, not only because it is made by none other than the legendary Château de St. Cosme, but also because it is made with 100% Syrah of the highest quality from vineyards in Vinsobres. The wine delivers charming aromatics of fresh blueberries, violets and dare I say, even grapes! On the palate though, the acidity frames all this fruit firmly but nicely. This is a pretty wine to be enjoyed with a wide variety of lighter dishes or even by itself.

At once inviting and incredibly rich, the 2015 captures the essence of both this gorgeous vintage and the qualities that make Saint Cosme one of Gigondas' top producers. This is loaded with brambly black raspberry fruit, leaning towards Chambord in its concentration. Plenty of Asian spices and some dusty minerality on the finish round out the profile. The freshness of fruit that is 2015 is also exhibited with lovely acidity to keep everything focused and in balance. Saint Cosme makes benchmark Gigondas that rivals and often surpasses Chateauneuf wines to the south, try this gorgeous Rhone that captures many of those elements for a fraction of the price.
