28-year-old Rioja... 1985 Viña Real Reserva - 09/05/2013 - Spain

We continue to be excited about, and regularly work on sourcing, older vintages of top flight wines from Napa, Bordeaux and beyond. Here is one that we found to be stunning – a wine that is not from those more exalted regions but one that hails from Rioja (where wine production goes back to antiquity, pre-dating Bordeaux!) The 1985 Viña Real Reserva is exactly what a fully mature Rioja should be all about. For well under $100, here’s a 28 year-old beauty that is absolutely singing right now. Fans of older Napa, Bordeaux and Burgundy, you will want to check this out!

Please note - this is being offered on a special presale basis and is due to arrive in 1-2 weeks.

1985 Viña Real Reserva Rioja - 0 available ($79.99)

Viña Real is owned by Cune, one of the big names in Rioja whose best wines are benchmarks of the region. While Cune is based in Haro, their sister brand Viña Real is located between Logroño and Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, which is where most of the fruit is sourced. These wines are always a bit more high toned, fruit-driven and Burgundian in style, especially when made in a lovely, higher acid vintage such as 1985. Fans of older Rioja, as well as of those who enjoy older vintage wines, should absolutely give this wine a try. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

I really enjoyed the elegance of this wine. The nose displays an amazing bouquet of baked red fruit, earthy savor, cocoa, wood and light spice. After an hour it unveiled its underlying sweet fruit, and an almost iron-like minerality that lends persistence on the palate. Thought mature, this wine has maintained lively acidity, making it the perfect complement to a very special meal!

My first older Viña Real experience was at Kaia Kaipe, an excellent restaurant (one of bizillions!) outside of San Sebastián. The maitre d'/sommelier, Igor, suggested a bottle of the '87 Viña Real Reserva to go alongside our '87 Muga Prado Enea. Both were tasty, but the humbler Viña Real was easily the better wine of the two; it was absolutely singing! The '85 Viña Real is also delicious. Aromatically one finds sous bois, cocoa powder, dried mushrooms and earthy notes on the bass end with some bright, lively red fruits and spices on the high end. On the palate, there is red bery confit, hints of baked brown sugar, and moderately high acid which will really provide a perfect foil to the right food. Beautiful, impeccably balanced, fully mature Rioja to drink now with leg of lamb or a nicely grilled Ribeye served Basque Asador style, with crisp fried potatoes and soft, roasted piquillo peppers on the side.
