Bonterra Cabernet ($11.99) 92 WE - 11/03/2010 - Cabernet Sauvignon (domestic)

Bonterra winery became focused on the organic side of wine back in 1987. At that time they were working on food and wine pairings and they noted how bright and fresh the flavors of the organic fruits, vegetables and spices seemed to be. This naturally begged the next question, why wouldn’t organic grapes do the same for wine? Bonterra winery has become well-known for producing excellent value-priced Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, Syrah and Viogniers all from organicly grown fruit. "Bonterra has not only produced a stunning value in their 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is also one of the best organic Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted to date. (Alex Pross, K&L)"

2008 Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon Mendocino-Lake County ($11.99)

92 points, an Editors' Choice and #21 on the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Wines of 2010: "A wonderful red wine, full-bodied, dry and elegant. It shows Cabernet character in the blackberries, cherries and black currants, but that’s balanced with an earthiness and minerality and even some smoked meat notes that must come from a perpercentage of Syrah and Petite Sirah. Tasted in a flight of much more expensive Cabs, this one easily stood out. Drink now 2011." (10/11)

In the wine business we spend entirely too much time evaluating wines above $40 a bottle and not enough time finding great wines in the $10-$15 range that truly over-deliver. The 2008 Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect example of a wine that does just that, over-delivers. This wine has juicy red fruit with great balance and subtle hints of vanilla and spice. The finish is long with good lift and there's just enough acidity to make this the perfect food wine. If you're looking for a great everyday Cabernet Sauvignon under $15 your search is over and it is organic to boot!
