According to the Wine Spectator: "Fresh and clean, with a mineral edge to the apple and lemon flavors. Dry and light-bodied, with fine intensity, balance and a lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2016. 1,000 cases imported." (12/08) The Robert Weil estate is one of Rheingau's top producers and has holdings in some of the region's best vineyards. Recently parting ways with their American distributor we are able to offer some of the excellent Estate wines at prices we haven't seen in years. 2007 Robert Weil Estate Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken ($35 Elsewhere)
($19.99)
According to the Wine Spectator: "Nicely balanced between the dry character, lively acidity and juicy peach and lemon fruit. Needs a little time to settle down, but has both intensity and elegance. Best from 2009 through 2019. 200 cases imported." (Web Only, 2008) 2007 Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese ($90 Elsewhere)
($49.99)
94 points Wine Spectator: "This is juicy, with apricot, peach and grapefruit aromas and flavors weaving throughout the lush texture. Smooth and harmonious, with a fresh finish. Drink now through 2030. 100 cases imported." (Apr 09) 92 points in Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "A bright floral quality lifts the aromas of nectarine, quince and sweet herbs. Honeyed papaya flavor pairs with mineral salts to provide complexity, with a spicy crispness keeping the palate fresh. Well done! " (Jan/Feb '09) Find more German wines at KLWines.com | Friggin' Awesome Pinot - 09/30/2009 - Pinot Noir (domestic) This Sonoma Coast Pinot, sourced from some of the best vineyards on the North Coast, and crafted by one of California's up-and-coming winemakers, is a no-brainer. There's so much wine packed into the "La Brisa" it's hard to believe it fits in the bottle or that it sells for just $24.99. 2007 Roessler Cellars "La Brisa" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
($24.99)
92 points from Wine Spectator: "Tightly structured, firm and concentrated, with a trim beam of spice, earthen floor, dried currant and cranberry fruit that holds onto its earthy tannins through the long finish. Drink now through 2013. 1,137 cases made." (06/09) Roessler has been on our radar for a long time, dating back to their inaugural releases in 2000 that were made by the now famous Wells Guthrie of Copain. While Wells still hangs around in a consulting winemaker fashion, Scott Shapely, brother-in-law to Wells and former assistant winemaker at Siduri and Novy now makes the wines and is doing one heck of a job. The "La Brisa" is one of Roessler's three Pinot Noir "appellation bottlings," the fruit mostly coming from two vineyards - Griffin's Lair and Campbell Ranch. The warm, long summer of 2007 produced many great Pinots and this wine is no exception. With the high-toned prickly red fruits that are so common these days in Pinots that use whole cluster fermentation the nose is packed with boisterous aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate while depth is added by underlying notes of unsweetened cocoa powder and Christmas pudding. The palate turns to the soil, picking up delicious savory tones of mushroom and thyme, but don't worry fruit hounds there is plenty here for you too. Ripeness is the specialty of this wine and the slick boysenberry, fig paste and blueberry notes are more than enough to make this wine worth its paltry $25 price tag. (Bryan Brick, K&L) For more California Pinot Noir visit KLWines.com | 2006 Margaux and Latour Back in Stock - 09/30/2009 - Red Bordeaux Two phenomenal, high-scoring first growths from the 2006 vintage. 2006 Margaux, Margaux
($349.00)
95 points Wine Spectator: "This has a wonderful nose of perfume, sandalwood, ripe plum and berries. Full-bodied, with seamless tannins and a long finish. Gorgeous. Best after 2015." (03/09) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is not a big Château Margaux, its style showing more elegance and discretion. The tannins are soft, although producing a dense web that lies underneath the black currant and plum fruit flavors. It is a wine that envelops the mouth, an edge of firmness over velvet fruit textures. The wine floats away slowly on the close." 94 points Robert Parker: "It is worth noting that when the bottled 2006 Chateau Margaux, which appeared closed and less impressive than I had predicted from barrel, was retasted alongside the remarkable 2008, I elevated my score to 94+. It does not possess the size or power of the 2008 or 2005, but the 2006 exhibits impressive density, a deeper color, and the beautifully textured, pure style that is a hallmark of this estate. Moreover, it is relatively precocious, and can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years." (04/09) K&L's notes - Piney aromas and quite a bit of spice upfront. Very big on the palate, yet silky and elegant. Seems integrated but a bit reserved today. Fresh wine that should be great-not up to the 2005. **+ Ralph Sands: A fine expression of high-toned, pure fruit, strong and focused, again not as opulent as some recent releases and finishes a bit dryer than usual; good spice on the finish. Still very fine. 2006 Latour, Pauillac
($449.00)
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Latour has always had the reputation of producing great wines in the less great vintages. The 2006 is a case in point. It brings structure and ripeness into a form that is almost ethereal. That elegance dosn't take away from the powerfull fruit. The fruit in fact melds into the structure with ease. And, as a reminder this is a 206, the density gives way to freshness on the finish." (03/09) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Offers a pure nose of currant and blackberry, with crushed fruit. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and very polished, refined tannins. Long and classy. Best after 2016." (03/09) 95 points Robert Parker: "This is a beautifully rich Chateau Latour boasting a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet, smoky, charcoal, cassis, graphite, and forest floor-scented nose, full body, an attractive freshness, and sweet, noble tannins. This layered Latour is one of the vintage-s top dozen or so wines. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030." (02/09) K&L's notes - 86% Cab, 13% Merlot, 1% Cab Franc. Great red fruit aromas with exotic Asian spices. Delicious palate entry that is quite sweet. Fresh with mineral and red berry flavors. Superb wine and quite focused. Not as opulent as 2005 but more classic style. ($275.00)
A great price for a Magnum of one of the best Champagnes in the world! Wine is due in middle of October. 995 points Wine Spectator: "A powerful, well-toned Champagne, featuring coconut, toast, grapefruit and coffee aromas and flavors. There are plenty of bass notes, punctuated by crisp acidity, and it all comes together on the fine texture with an aftertaste of roasted hazelnut and coffee. Drink now through 2014." (11/09) 92 points and 2 stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Is it too old or just right? Very few sparkling wines of any stripe are as complex as the Krug Grande Cuvee, a blending of old and young into a layered, toasty, nutty, subtly ripe apple aroma with hints of French Roast all tied to a refined yet fully charged set of bubbles. Rich, creamy, almost fleshy for the breed, this latest version is both a dream come true for lovers of aged Champagne and a challenge for folks who prefer a lighter, brisker, more citrusy style." 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Brut Grand Cuvee offers up attractive suggestions of pears, quince, spice, brioche and minerals. As is often the case here, the Grand Cuvee reveals notable elegance and finesse. The use of reserve wines in the blend givEees this wine an unusual level of complexity." (12/08) | Special Offer: Togni Spring Mountain Cab (94-96 points) & Beringer PR Sale - 09/29/2009 - Cabernet Sauvignon (domestic) Parker calls Philip Togni, "...an irrefuatable source of remarkable Cabernet Sauvignons that last 20-30+ years!" In a vintage like 2007, this may even be an understatement. That's why we are thrilled to offer the 2007 Togni Spring Mountain Cab before all the critics weigh in and make it scarce. Please note that this wine isn't currently in stock, but will arrive in stores for pick up or shipping on November 15.
While you're making room in your cellar, save some space for the critically acclaimed 2005 Beringer "Private Reserve" Cab for 20% off. This wine is scheduled to arrive for pick up or shipping later this week. 2007 Philip Togni Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Pre-Arrival
($87.99)
94-96 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (1,500 cases) is made in a different style than the 2006, but it is just as provocative and compelling in quality. The sweetness of its tannins sets it apart from other vintages, but it exhibits a dense purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of incense, blackberries, cedar, licorice, and a hint of charcoal. It possesses remarkable full-bodied power and concentration along with stunning purity, equilibrium, and a finish that elicits a big smile. This fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon is built along the lines of Togni’s 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1997. By Togni’s standards, it will be drinkable at a young age, 4-5 years, and keep for 30+ years." (12/08) 91-94 points Stephen Tanzer: "Deep ruby. Inky blackberry and dark chocolate on the nose. Lush, sweet and primary, with ripe briary berry and dark chocolate flavors complicated by a smoky nuance; became even more plush with aeration, showing an enticing boysenberry flavor. Finishes very long and sweet. Philip Togni had a big crop in 2007 and thinned the fruit extensively, ultimately harvesting in early October, just before a day of heavy rain on Spring Mountain. The 2007 blend includes 20% press wine." (May/June '09) ETA: November 15, 2009. 2005 Beringer "Private Reserve" Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
- 0
available
($79.99)
94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright medium ruby. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, minerals and sweet spices. Lush and creamy, with explosive, fully ripe dark fruit and mineral flavors and terrific back-end lift. Finishes with big, broad, fine-grained tannins and impressive length. The goal here is not to make an early-drinking wine but one with sweet tannins and thoroughly ripe fruit, notes winemaker Laurie Hook, but I find this sexy from the start." (May/June '08) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Offers richness, concentration and depth while remaining elegant and supple, focusing on the ripe, spicy currant, mineral, herb and sage notes..." (10/08) 92 points Robert Parker: "There is no doubt that the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is the top wine in the portfolio. Delicious notes of smoky oak, creme de cassis, espresso roast, blackberries, and graphite are followed by a full-bodied, powerful, rich wine with undeniable elegance and finesse as well as sweet tannins. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. This cuvee usually includes about 5% Cabernet Franc in the blend. I doubt this vintage will turn out to be as impressive as the 2004, 2002, and 2001 Private Reserves." 93 points W&S: "A great vintage of Private Reserve...the tannin shapes the complexity of the wine, the dark fruit and licorice flavors smoothed by oak. It's a formidable cabernet, deserving of ten years in the cellar to reach peak drinking." ETA: 10/1/09 We have nearly 500 Napa Cabs for near-term drinking and cellaring at KLWines.com | Holy @$!@ Aussie SB for only $5.99 - 09/29/2009 - Australia We're practically giving this spicy, citrus Sauv Blanc away. It's delicious and only $5.99. What else do you want us to say? 2007 Slipstream Sauvignon Blanc Western Australia ($9.99-$12.99 Elsewhere)
($5.99)
From Stephen Tanzer's IWC: "Light gold. Spicy lime, lemon, white peach and mineral aromas, with a kiss of jasmine; avoids the herbaceous quality of most Southern Hemisphere versions of the variety. Clean and brisk, offering racy citrus zest and peach skin flavors along with dusty quinine and honeysuckle. Finishes clean and brisk." And from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc comes from low yields of 2 tons per acre and was tank-fermented. Medium straw-colored, it has an alluring bouquet of fresh herbs, citrus, and gooseberry. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with round, concentrated flavors, good depth, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish." (08/08) Dan Pannell makes this wine at Picardy in Western Australia with fruit sourced from the cool Pemberton region. The wine is crisp and clean with aromas of citrus, herb and honeysuckle. On the palate, there is a wonderful creamy texture with mouthwatering acidity and a long, refreshing finish. An absolute steal. (Jim Chanteloup, K&L Aussie wine buyer) Looking for other great values? We've got more than 200 wines under $10 at KLWines.com | Pair of Tuscan Bargains (90 points each, Wine Spectator) - 09/29/2009 - Italy Tuscany is synonymous with a lot of things - super-affordable wine is generally not one of them. But this pair of wines - one Chianti, one Super-Tuscan - represent remarkable values that have us and the Wine Spectator's James Suckling kvelling. 2006 Monte Antico Tuscan IGT
($8.99)
90 points and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Bright plum, dried cherry and flowers on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and refined berry and cherry flavors. Drink now." (10/09) And from Wine Spectator's James Suckling's Blog: "I came across an incredible value in my office in Tuscany today...the most impressive [wine] for the money was the Monte Antico 2006. Its suggested retail is $11, and it could sell for less. And it's in the market now. Granted, I have not tasted it blind yet. But it's in the very good to outstanding range. The wine is 75 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. It is made from 25-year-old vines minimum, mostly from Pisa, Maremma and Chianti Classico areas. Of course, the quality of the 2006 vintage in Tuscany shined through on this wine. This is a superb Sangiovese year. The aromatic quality of Sangiovese is mind-blowing for most wines from Tuscany. The 2006 Monte Antico has beautiful plums, berries and fresh acidity. Fantastico! And for $11! Anyway, the Monte Antico is bottled now in a screw cap instead of a cork." Special orders are 2 Day turnaround 2007 Caststello di Querceto Chianti Classico
($11.99)
90 points Wine Spectator "A full-bodied, well-structured version, with crushed black fruit, flowers and oak on the nose and palate, coating the firm tannins and giving a long, controlled finish. Tempting now, but will improve. Best after 2009." According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Chianti Classico offers up floral red fruit in a ripe, soft style that is typical of the vintage. Drink this generous, engaging Chianti Classico over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012." (08/09) And finally, from Wine Enthusiast: "Castello di Querceto opens with an attractive nose that recalls coffee, espresso bean and mature blackberry or currants. You’ll want to pair this well-priced wine with big, succulent foods such as grilled or barbecued meat." ($89.99)
95 points from the Wine Spectator: "Pure, rich and focused, full-bodied and concentrated, showing firm black cherry and blackberry fruit, with black olive, sage, dusty earth and mineral hints. Gains depth and complexity, with a long, persistent finish. Best from 2010 through 2017." (10/15/09). Robert Parker rated Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon a perfect 100, the first ever for a California wine. For decades these guys have made some of the most popular Cabs on the market. This price reduction on one of Napa's best bottlings makes it an attractive option while our inventory lasts. Don't wait. | 40% Off '04 "Bembibre" (93 pts WE, Top 100 and an Editors' Choice) - 09/28/2009 - Spain If you're looking for cellar-worthy Spanish wines, but don't have a lot of coin, this Bierzo - at 40% off - offers value in spades. "Immediately pleasing" and "highly promising." 2004 Dominio de Tares "Bembibre" Bierzo
($24.99)
93 points, an "Editors' Choice" and wine #81 on the Wine Enthusiast "Top 100": "This blend of six vineyards is great. It’s dense and full of minerality, finely polished leather and pure berry aromas. The palate sings a melodious tune that begins with creamy oaky notes and expands to more defined plum, vanilla and fine herb flavors. The ’04 Bembibre is a rounder, more complete version than the impressive but more austere 2002 (the last Bembibre we reviewed). It is immediately pleasing and keeps you on the hook to the end." (11/1/2007) 92 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Intense aromas of vanilla, baking spices, graphite, blackcurrant and cherry liqueur, with accents of white pepper, espresso and violet. Bright and racy on the palate, with finely etched blackberry and cassis flavors enlivened by tangy acids and notes of bitter chocolate and pepper. A concentrated, youthfully taut and highly promising wine, finishing with lingering sweetness and a suave floral element. Hold off on opening this for at least a year or two." (Sept/Oct '06) 91 points from Wine Spectator: "Elegant and intense. This perfumed, finely etched red offers berry, wild herb and wet stone notes that are lively and harmonious, with plenty of structure to back them up. The long, floral finish brings you back for another sip. Drink now through 2014. 4,000 cases made." Don't wait. 2006 The Colonial Estate "Evangeliste" Reserve Chardonnay (Elsewhere $25)
($14.99)
90 points from Stephen Tanzer's IWC for this beautiful Adelaide Hills Chardonnay: "Greenish straw. Smoky, lees-accented orange and white peach aromas display exotic nuances of bacon, dried flowers and minerals. Chewy pit fruit flavors are dense and ripe but nicely braced by energetic minerality, which carries through the long, juicy finish. Gains weight on the back without losing focus. This is drinking beautifully right now." 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Evangeliste Reserve Chardonnay saw one-third of the wine aged in new French oak for 6-7 months with no malolactic fermentation. It is light gold colored with toasty, tropical aromas, particularly pineapple. Broad on the palate with adequate acidity, the wine offers some finesse as well as ripe, tasty flavors and a medium-long finish." 2006 The Colonial Estate "Explorateur" Barossa Shiraz (Elsewhere $28.99)
($14.99)
92 points from Stephen Tanzer's IWC: "(a 90/10 blend of shiraz and cabernet) Inky ruby. Smoky, deep aromas of spicy black and blue fruits, espresso and lively licorice. Chewy bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors are firmed by chunky tannins and given bite by a late mineral quality. Gains power and structure with air but retains sweetness and clarity. This is pretty serious." 90 points from Wine Spectator: "Lush in texture, but subtle in flavor, with black olive and meat notes adding interest to the dark berry and licorice flavors, lingering with finesse on the silky finish. Drink now through 2016. 8,500 cases made." 2005 Pirathon (Kalleske) Barossa Shiraz ($27 Elsewhere)
($19.99)
93 points from The Wine Enthusiast and number #13 in their Top 100: "There’s no doubt this is done in what some critics might call a fruit-bomb style. But boy is it gorgeously made. The creamy-smooth mouthfeel and lush layers of flavors effortlessly carry palate-saturating notes of licorice and plum. Long on the finish, with a surprising degree of elegance. A blend of various growers’ fruit vinified by winemaker Troy Kalleske. Drink now thru 2015." (11/07) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pirathon is a new brand owned by wine enthusiast Stephen Ho and winemaker Troy Kalleske. The fruit is sourced from the Greenock Creek area to make this regional Shiraz. The 2005 Pirathon is opaque purple with an expressive perfume of toast, mineral, plum, and blueberry. Full-bodied, it offers layered sweet fruit, a firm mid-palate, good balance and excellent length. It has several years of aging potential but can be enjoyed now. It is an excellent value in Barossa Shiraz." (10/07) Check out all our Aussie wines at KLWines.com | Wines that Seriously Over-Deliver for the Price - 09/25/2009 - Cabernet Sauvignon (domestic) Typically we bombard you with points - 93 from this guy, 96 from that guy - but on these two wines from Cimarone, fans at K&L are leading the charge. The Cimarone wines are simply so good, in fact, that we couldn’t refrain from sending out an e-mail about them. So hop on our bandwagon and find out for yourself before the press gets their teeth into them, and the wines disappear like hot cakes at a logger’s convention. 2007 Cimarone "3CV-Bank" Three Creek Vineyard Santa Ynez Valley Red Blend
($19.99)
What happens when you put together 47% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot? Well, in this case you get the 3CV Bank Blend. This 300-case production wine comes from Cimarone's organically-grown Three Creek Vineyard in the Happy Canyon sub-appellation of the Santa Ynez Valley, and it is made by Happy Canyon champion Doug Margerum. (Magerum has been instrumental in helping Happy Canyon obtain its own AVA, which has been approved but is not yet in effect.) This Bordeaux blend with a twist caught me by storm with a nose full of cedar, cigar smoke, espresso and anisette. Forward, fruity and fun, this is a wine that is meant to be enjoyed now with all of its tangy raspberry, black plum and boysenberry fruit. Add a dusting of fine tannins towards the finish and this wine comes off as being very complete and fleshy, a steal for $20 a bottle. ($29.99)
The "Le Clos Secret" is a blend of 45% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec that really shows its Right Bank roots. It comes from Cilla and Roger Higgins'organically-grown Three Creek Vineyard in the Happy Canyon sub-appelation of the Santa Ynez Valley, which was planted in 2001, and is made by Happy Canyon champion Doug Margerum (Margerum Cellars, Happy Canyon Vineyard). The big chunk of Cabernet Franc makes this wine stand out instantly, with evergreen, lavender and fern notes on the nose that make you think: there is something wonderfully different about this wine. While bigger and richer than its litter sister, 3CV Bank, it has a similar concentration of fruit, with a bit more upfront oak adding dimension and potential for aging. The flavors of blackberry, cassis, mushroom and redwood are excitingly refreshing for a domestic Bordeaux-style blend. I think this is as good as any $30 wine we have in the store right now, even those from a more "prestigious" region. (Bryan Brick, K&L) According to WIne Spectator: "Firm and spicy, with zesty wild berry and black cherry notes that are vibrant and intense, ending with full-bodied tannins and a rich aftertaste of loamy earth. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2014. 215 cases made." 95 points and #13 on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Chocolate, blackberry and black cherry aromas lead to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a deep concentration of fruit. Powerfully rich and polished. Big and structured. Best after 2012." (10/09) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Fontalloro is much more sweet and open than the firmer Rancia. Enticing, expressive aromatics lead to an expansive core of fruit. Round, finessed tannins give the wine an additional level of polish. Today the Fontalloro is fleshier and more ready than the Rancia. There is superb purity to the fruit and wonderful overall balance. Tar, smoke, licorice, and grilled herbs come to life on the finish. Fontalloro is made from vineyards in both the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Simply put, this is a great, majestic Fontalloro. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018. Delicious, affordable, and a no-brainer for a terrific aperitif or gulpable white wine as far as I'm concerned, there are few better deals for less than 10 bucks. (Joe Manekin, K&L Portuguese and Spanish wine buyer) 2008 Adega Cooperativo Regional de Monçao "Trajarinho" Vinho Verde, Portugal
($8.99)
Classic, dry, fizzy Vinho Verde does not get much better than this! This is one of our current favorites: crisp, citric, relatively low in alcohol and in a classically dry style. Don't let the deliciousness fool you, though; this white offers up a whole lot more complexity than the humble price might suggest. More than likely, one could attribute this amazing quality to two factors: First, the rock solid reputation and focus on quality of the Adega Cooperativo Regional de Monçao; and second, their reliance on Trajadura and Alvarinho grapes, which deliver wine of greater complexity and texture than the Paderña grape so commonly grown in the rest of the Vinho Verde region. Explore our entire selection of Portuguese wine at KLWines.com | More than Half Off a Spectacular Vintage Prestige Cuvee - 09/23/2009 - Champagne Wow! We just secured an incredible deal on a 1998 vintage prestige cuvee Champagne made by Beaumont des Crayeres in Mardeuil for John Paul DeJoria, the man behind the Patron tequila brand. Unfortunately for DeJoria, the launch of this new brand, which was priced at more than $100 a bottle, came at the wrong time. The wine arrived on the market just as the recession to hit. At $100, the price for this wine was too high, but at $34.99 it is an incredible deal in vintage bubbles that's too good to pass up. 1998 Dejoria Platinum Brut Champagne ($90+ elsewhere)
($34.99)
We tasted this Champagne and liked it when it was expensive, but didn't feel that it offered great value at that high price. After months of going back and forth, we ended up with a better deal than we thought possible and bought everything the distributor had. This is a wine cut from the Ace of Spades cloth (which we sell for $269), both in production (the Ace is also a brand made by a separate producer) and in flavor. It is made entirely from the first press juice of a strict selection of Beaumont des Crayeres 212 acres of vines. It is very well balanced, exceedingly easy to drink Champagne that is velvety smooth without being sweet or fat. The wine has lovely maturity from long aging on the lees, but also has nice freshness on the finish. It is a very easy to like style that does not have any sharp edges or esoteric flourishes. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer) What a lovely Champagne! Initially, a full palate of ripe golden apples, butter and lemon creme. A rich mid-palate and a surprising finish with crisp acidity and minerality. The finish really balances this wine out and sets it apart from competing bubblies that are all about richness and end up being one-trick ponies. I had our San Francisco staff taste it on Labor Day weekend and they enjoyed it immensely. At this price, it is a really good bargain! Needs time. Best after 2013." (03/08) 91 points Robert Parker: "This forward-styled 2005 possesses a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a big, sweet bouquet of roasted herbs, fudge, espresso, figs, and cherry jam. Opulent, even decadent, with low acidity, but high glycerin and fruit extract as well as a flamboyant fleshiness, this is a stunningly impressive, hedonistic, savory Margaux to enjoy between 2010-2025." (04/08) K&L's barrel tasting notes - Vibrant, deep purple. Tastes great at Joanne. Big wine and finely balanced. Tasted three times. This could be a super winner. Has balance and great structure. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and an aftertaste of chocolate and delicate fruit. Best after 2012." (03/08) And, according to Robert Parker: "Deep plum/ruby-colored to the rim, the medium-bodied 2005 Chasse Spleen offers up aromas of smoke, damp earth, charcoal, black cherries, and currants. The tannins dominate at present, so purchasers should cellar it for 5-6 years, and consume it over the following two decades." (04/08) ETA: Late Oct 2009. 2005 La Grave à Pomerol, Pomerol Pre-Arrival

(03/08) According to Robert Parker: "Stylish and elegant, this 2005 has as much in common with a Cote de Beaune premier cru as it does with a Pomerol. Kirsch, raspberry, seaweed, and loamy soil aromas lead to a medium-bodied, finesse-styled claret possessing sweet tannin, pure fruit, and a sensual personality. It begs to be consumed over the next decade." (04/08) According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red-ruby. Sweet aromas of raspberry, spices and smoky oak. Supple, sweet and pliant, but with lively acidity giving lift to the black fruit, spice and earth flavors. A graceful wine with good stuffing and sex appeal. Finishes with soft tannins and subtle persistence. A very successful vintage for this Pomerol." (May/Jun 06) ETA: Late Oct 2009. 2001 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien Pre-Arrival

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "A classic in development, a wine that will last for decades. It is certainly powerful, but already the shape is finalized, with its plums and berries settling down with perfumes, acidity, just enough tannins and a warm, welcoming richness. A great argument for the superiority of 2001 over 2000." (12/07) 94 points Wine Spectator: "This is very floral and perfumed with lots of violets, roses and berries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a racy finish. Superfresh and long. Focused and clean. Best after 2010." (03/04) 93 points Robert Parker: "Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030." The second wine of Pichon-Longueville-Lalande. Best after 2012." (Web 08) K&L's notes - It's hard to believe that this is a second wine; it's so elegant and refined. Comprised of 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot packed with summer fruit on the bouquet: blackberries, plums and strawberries, punctuated by orange blossom and characteristic cedar oak notes. Fine tannins, hints of mineral and wisps of smokiness wrap around the fruit on the palate. A great value from an incredible vintage. Do not miss this. It is their best EVER and great for the cellar! 95 points Robert Parker: "Along with the 2000, the 2005 is one of the two greatest d’Issans I have ever tasted. Kudos to proprietor Emmanuel Cruse for creating this beauty. Its dense purple hue is accompanied by aromas of camphor, forest floor, blackberries, cassis, and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with superb richness, purity, texture, and abundant, sweet tannin, it should hit its stride in 3-4 years, and last for 25+. Bravo!" (04/08) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Displays blackberry and black licorice aromas, with some tar. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Tight and structured. Needs time. Best after 2013." (03/08) ETA: Late Oct 2009. 2006 Trotanoy, Pomerol
($74.99)
95 points and one of Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2009: "This is a strongly structured and impressively textured wine. The tannins shoot through, giving a sense of dryness. But in the center, the wine shows power through both tannins and fruit, with blackberries and red plums. It has a preciscion and shape that promises long aging. Cellar Selection." (03/09) 93 points Robert Parker: "Showing better than it did from barrel, the 2006 Trotanoy does have one consistent characteristic that seems to be pervasive no matter what the vintage’s style and personality is - an earthy, big-boned, brawny, muscular style. This wine is deep, rich, full-bodied, with loads of meaty black cherry fruit intermixed with crushed rocks, truffle, and a hint of autumnal vegetation. The wine is broad, deep, and built for serious connoisseurs with cellars to wait it out. This wine needs 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for at least two decades. It is an impressive Trotanoy, but not one for those unable to defer their gratification." (02/09) 93 points Wine Spectator: " Berry, coffee and tobacco aromas follow through to a full body, with well-integrated tannins and a long, caressing finish. There's a solid core of fruit. 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Etude's 2005 defines power and authority, Napa style. It's hard to imagine a Cabernet Sauvignon more explosive in blackberry, cherry and chocolate fruit flavor. Yet the structure is superb, with firm but ultrarefined tannins providing an architecture to house all that richness. Beautiful now, and should age gracefully for a decade. Relatively easy to find, with 4,600 cases produced." (03/09) 90 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa's deep ruby/purple hue is followed by notes of black currants, lead pencil, tobacco leaf, and spice box. Well-made, with medium body as well as good fruit, texture, and depth, it should drink nicely for 12-15+ years. " (12/08) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Full deep red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of black and red raspberry, currant, plum, graphite and spicy oak. Supple entry, then bright and sharply delineated thanks to firm acids. Fruit-driven flavors of currant, cherry and leather. Expands nicely on the aftertaste. Tannins are suaver than those of the '96." (Web Only 2008) 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to Calfornia Wine: "Nicely outgoing and well-focused on fairly concentrated aromas of black cherries and creamy oak, this wine is full in body without giving itself over to heaviness and has a supple feel on the palate and appropriate structure in support. Its tannins are well within the bounds for Cabernet, and the wine needs only three to five years to reach its best." 92 points Wines & Spirits: "The fresh flavors of this wine fall between nuts and fruit, hinting at loquat or kumquat. Its mouthwatering acidity has the briny character of sea spray. Harmonious in the middle, quiet and lasting in the end, this is a luscious white for Dover sole." (8/09) The 2007 Licia shows the benefit of an extra year in bottle for good albariño; ripe red apple aromas lead to a mouthful of rich, round, yellow stone fruit, some tell tale albariño smoky granite tinged minerality, and a hint of salinity on the finish which is amazingly fresh and invites you to take another sip, or, more likely, a gulp. Drink this chilled while you wait for your skewers of chicken, shrimp, meat or veges to finish up on the grill. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of lead pencil, ripe cherries and black currants, and hints of earth and vanillin. Dense, chewy, fleshy, and full-bodied, this beauty will be drinkable in 3-4 years, and should keep for 15-20." (04/08) 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good full red-ruby. Superripe aromas of plum, mocha, coffee and spicy oak. Big, dry, broad and rich, with a chewy quality and noteworthy sweetness to the plummy flavor. ($69.99)
95 points Robert Parker: "From a less than noble terroir in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Gerard Perse has accomplished miraculous things at Monbousquet. Prior to his acquisition of this property in the mid-nineties, this wine tasted like watered-down Beaujolais, but Perse has turned it into one of the more stunning, modern-styled wines of Bordeaux...the 2005 exhibits plenty of toasty oak, roasted herb, meat juice, blackberry, cherry, and spice characteristics along with a touch of incense. Full-bodied and opulent, with an atypically rigid structure, this is a remarkable achievement for such a humble terroir. It admirably reflects Gerard Perse's obsessive commitment to excellence. Look for this 2005 to hit its stride in 7-8 years, and last for 15-20." (04/08) 93 points Stephen Tanzer: "Full ruby-red. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, smoked meat, mocha and licorice. Wonderfully sweet, dense and fat but with excellent vinosity and inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of berries, mocha and licorice. A compellingly tactile vintage for Monbousquet, with the substantial but sweet tannins buffered by the wine's chewy mid-palate material...Really transcends its less-than-ideal terroir in Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens." (May/Jun '08) 91 points Wine Spectator: 'Shows beautiful aromas of crushed blackberry, currant and sultana. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and beautiful. 93 points Robert Parker: "Smart consumers should be checking out this estate whose wines have been superb over recent vintages. Under the same ownership as Gloria, it is a classic St.-Julien with sensational concentration and intensity, but more powerful, thick, and muscular than wines such as Ducru Beaucaillou or Beychevelle. The 2005 possesses the vintage's structured, tannic mouthfeel as well as enormous concentration and massive extract. It exhibits plenty of earthy creme de cassis intermixed with notes of forest floor, licorice, and roasted meats. Backward with huge tannin, full body, and the potential for 3-4 decades of aging, this superb St.-Julien will get even better over the next 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040." (04/08) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A very beautiful red, with blackberry, licorice and currant on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of smoke, berry, coffee and dark chocolate flavors on the finish. The best wine from this producer in ages. Best after 2014." (03/08) 92 points Stephen Tanzer: "ood red-ruby color. Superripe aromas of plum, mocha and graphite. Silky-sweet, deep and broad, with terrific concentration of currant and licorice flavors complicated by leather, herbs and pepper. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, broad tannins and noteworthy length and power. Costanzo says this wine needs another six months in bottle to gain in nuance." Very ripe aromas of plum and musky brown spices; redder in character and less precise than the 2006. Then big, sweet and plump on the palate, with full, mellow flavors of red berries, tobacco and mocha, plus a light smoked meat note. Finishes with sweet tannins and lingering, fully ripe fruit. This is showing its lush side today and is hiding its underlying structure." (May/June '08) ETA: Sept 25, 2009. We still have a good selection of 2005 Bordeaux at KLWines.com | 2007 Pahlmeyer Napa Chardonnay (95 points CG) $69.99 - 09/17/2009 - Chardonnay (domestic) This Chard just reappeared on the radar after a spectacular writeup in last week's Wall Street Journal. We have a few bottles in stock but will be getting more by late next week, and taking pre-sale orders until that time. 2007 Pahlmeyer Napa Chardonnay
($69.99)
95 points Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "...places Pahlmeyer solidly in the pantheon of outstanding Chardonnay producers in California. This wine, if anything, is too young even to be considered for drinking. It may have a strong, bold personality highlighted by sweet appley scents and smoky oak overlays, but it is also tight in the latter palate and has not begun to open up fully. Lay it down for a year or three or more and drink the 2006 in the meantime." (06/09) 92 points Robert Parker: "There are 3,300 cases of the 2007 Chardonnay Napa, which reveals more honeysuckle and ripe peach characteristics, a deeper, fleshier mouthfeel, and less minerality. It suffers only in comparison to the prodigious Sonoma Coast offering. Full-bodied with brilliant acidity, it can be consumed over the next 5-7 years. Things just seem to get better and better at Pahlmeyer, a long-standing, brilliant, remarkably consistent source for one of Napa’s finest Merlots, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs." (12/08) From the Wall Street Journal: "Delicious. Best of tasting. What California Chardonnay can be, with ripe, rich fruit held in such control it seems to vibrate. Clean, focused and classy, with some mouthfeel and the most luscious roasted-lime finish, with a lingering hint of nutmeg. World-class. Ageable." (09/09) | 2007 Caymus Napa Valley "Special Selection" - 09/17/2009 - Cabernet Sauvignon (domestic) From the highly-regarded '07 vintage. You'll be hearing a lot about 2007 in the coming months. ($104.99)
You've heard that 2007 was a superlative vintage in 2007, now's your chance to taste for youself with one of the Napa Valley's most esteemed wines, vintage after vintage. Caymus introduced the "Special Selection" more than 30 years ago, and it has consistently recieved raves from critics and customers alike. Winemaker Chuck Wagner describes the 2007 as having a concentrated bouquet of dark berries and cassis that open up to reveal black cherry, currant, blueberry, chocolate, spice and smoke flavors on the palate. A broad mouthfeel with firm texture at this point, this fruit-filled wine holds it's power through the long, velvety finish. Wine is due November 2009! | Plenty of Joy in Melville - 09/17/2009 - Pinot Noir (domestic) Melville consistently makes some of the most impressive wines from the Central Coast and, vintage after vintage, those from the Verna's estate vineyard in Los Alamos, are among the best. This trio of wines showcases the influence of that vineyard on three different varietals and the hands-off craftsmanship of Grew Brewer (Brewer-Clifton, Diatom) one of the region's stars. 2007 Melville "Estate-Verna's" Santa Barbara Chardonnay
($18.99)
90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Yellow-gold color. Deep, smoky orchard and pit fruit aromas are complemented by toasty lees and minerals. Juicy, lightly sweet pear and white peach flavors deliver solid punch, with good back-end grip. Spicy notes build on the long, sappy finish, which echoes the leesy and mineral qualities." (Nov/Dec '07) If you're looking for an über-decadent Chardonnay, this isn't for you. But, if you like a wine with great texture, acidity and purity, then buy, buy, buy! Winemaker Greg Brewer exhibits wonderful restraint with the 2007 "Verna's" Chardonnay, allowing only partial malolactic fermentation (15%) and sur lie aging without the aggressive stirring of many other California Chards. What results is an elegant, balanced wine with quince, pear, ginger and tamarind aromas and a palate with a lovely sea foam, stony component. Subtle hints of wild sage, carrot and hazelnut add another dimension, lifted by cool-climate acidity and great mid-palate texture. 2008 Melville "Estate-Verna's" Santa Barbara Pinot Noir
($19.99)
91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. Fresh red berries and Asian spices on the nose, with notes of rose and magnolia adding complexity. Lively and precise in the mouth, showing nervy redcurrant and strawberry flavors and a pungent floral quality. Finishes with very good seamless length and a strong echo of sweet red berries." (Nov/Dec '09) The new Verna's Estate Pinot Noir is a perfect example of the frugal drinkability Melville has to offer. From the get-go the nose tells you that you are going to be in for a wildly delicious ride. Strawberry, lavender, Rainier cherry are all presented on a crisp, vibrant frame. The lightweight nature here is nothing to fear, remember this is Pinot and Greg Brewer, more prominently know for his work with Brewer-Clifton and Diatom, makes some of the most feminine, and yet flavor-packed Pinots in California. Using 12% new French oak and 33% whole cluster fermentation, Greg keeps the raw materials in full view. The red fruited nature of this wine resonates throughout backed by echoing flavors of beef carpaccio, flowering thyme, spearmint and Asian plum. Is it too early to start thinking about turkey? (Bryan Brick, K&L) 2007 Melville "Estate-Verna's" Santa Rita Hills Syrah
($19.99)
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a cool site comes this wiry, tannic Syrah. It's pretty astringent now, a bone-dry, peppery wine with wild blackberry, herb, violet and pepper flavors finishing with stony, chalky minerality. Cellaring for a few years should soften the edges." (11/09) From Robert Parker: "The 2007 Syrah Verna's Vineyard is the most supple, forward, and fruity of this trio. It is a straightforward Syrah offering plenty of blue and black fruit, floral, cassis, and blackberry characteristics, soft, round, medium to full-bodied flavors, and copious glycerin as well as plushness. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years. While Melville may be more well-known for their brilliant Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, they also do a spectacular job with Rhone varietals." (09/09) The 2007 Verna's Estate Syrah from Melville is sultry and beautiful, with heady aromas of Provençal herbs, pumpkin spice and white pepper to complement black cherry and beet sweetness and a hint of gunflint. And that's just the beginning. Savory spice and herbs marry velvety blackberry fruit on the palate, which is framed by ripe tannins that will surely open up with age to reveal more fruit and earthy undertones. Drink now with some decanting or try to be patient and stash it away for the near-term, you will be rewarded. ($19.99)
92 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Yellow-gold. Idiosyncratic aromas of lime, hazelnut, lees and Chartreuse, with a stony mineral underpinning. Deeply concentrated citrus and peach pit flavors are complicated by brown butter and botanical herbs, with a strong licorice quality carrying into the finish. One of the most unique wines I've tasted in a long time, offering depth, vivacity and vaguely oxidized dried fruit character reminiscent of a old-wave Italian white wine or something from the Jura. Emphatically different and not for everyone..." (03/08) So critic Josh Reynolds from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar has wonderful things to say about this St-Veran, but he does describe this wine as "not for everyone." I definitely agree that the wine won't touch everyone the same way, but it most definitely is a wine for fans of rich, vibrant, mature-styled whites. Aromas of roasted hazelnuts, citrus rind, white flowers and chalky minerality - what's not to like about that? The wine also has a wonderful streak of acidity that keeps it focused and a long lingering finish with a hint of wood spice. Yes, this wine is an idiosyncratic adventure, but like most Burgundy of this kind, it is a journey worth taking. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood) 2005 Domaine Catherine & Dominique Derain Mercurey "La Plante Chassey" (Was $45 Elsewhere)
($19.99)
Dominique and Catherine Derain definitely take the minimalist approach. They farm biodyamically, hand harvest, do not chaptalize or acidify and use the barest amount of sulfur in their winemaking approach. The "La Plante Chassey" site is a south-east slope comprised of deep clay soils. A small percentage of Pinot Beurrot (an ancient Burgundy varietal) is planted in this vineyard and provides a touch of nuance to the wine. There is a silky nature to this Mercurey giving it a supple mouthfeel and a detailed range of raspberry and cherry fruit with a touch of pomegranate. It has lovely spice notes and touch of lavender on the nose. Given the economics of our time this is an extraordinary introduction to this region at an appealing price. Fans of Burgundy won't be disappointed and we may even make a few converts from the New World. And now you can have it for even less! 2006 J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay
($19.99)
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A fine wine that shows the classic structure of Russian River Chardonnay, and also a steely minerality that makes it a partner for food. That doesn’t mean it’s without fruit. The flavors of apricots, pears and more exotic tropical fruits are explosive, enhanced with smoky oak. Likely to develop bottle complexity over the next four years." (11/08) Winemaker George Bursick combines Old World techniques with New World fruit, and the results are quite tasty. Lemon and stone fruit aromas are balanced by hitns of almond butter and honey sandwiches on brioche. On the palate, the vanilla and caramel flavors swirl around the fruit, never over-powering it, but carrying through to the finish. 92 points Robert Parker: "Thackery's detour with the stubborn and largely unsuccessful Sangiovese grape in California is the gorgeous 2003 Aquila, which comes from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Medocino. Dark plum/garnet ruby, with a stunning nose of sweet kirsch intermixed with currants, fig, plum, and underbrush, the wine exhibits plenty of earthy, cedary, spice box notes, it has a good bit of glycerin and body as well as a silky, sumptuous finish. This is as good as Sangiovese can get in California. Drink it over the next 5-8 years." (08/09) ETA: Sept 18th 2009. 2006 Sean Thackrey "Sirius" Petite Sirah
- 6
available
($39.99)
95+ points Robert Parker: "The stunning 2006 Sirius, a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch that produced the gorgeous Sangiovese, is about as good as Petite Sirah gets in California. Long-time readers know I am a big fan of this underrated varietal in the Golden State, which also has a terrific track record of aging for 20-30 or more years when made in the manner such as Sean Thackrey's Sirius. This wine has no hard edges but is stacked and packed with black and blue fruits, camphor, and hints of pepper and spice. Moreover, the purity of the wine, the incremental way it builds on the palate, with no hard edges, creates a lavish, even extravagant flavor profile even for Petite Surah. This wine can be purchased now for its purity and beautiful fruit, but it will certainly last for at least two decades." (08/09) ETA: Sept 18th 2009. Legendary whisky critic Jim Murray calls Ardbeg the world's best single malts. I actually agree and think you will too. So, you ask, why the heck are they on sale!? The answer is: we didn't drop the price - the distributor did! It's crazy, but true. They wanted more people to be able to afford their great product, so I'm taking advantage of it. So should you. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits buyer) Ardbeg 10 year old Islay Single Malt Whisky (Was $59.99) 750ml
($55.99)
93 points from the Malt Advocate! World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray in his 2008 edition of The Whisky Bible. From the distiller: "AROMA - Exceptional balance and depth. At full strength, the aroma is a beguiling mix of toffee and chocolate sweetness, cinnamon spice and medicinal phenols. Fresh citrus and floral notes of white wine are evident, as are melon, pear drops and a gentle creaminess. There is also the fresh phenolic aroma of sea spray and smoked fish. Hickory and coffee emerge later as the most volatile top notes fade. With water, the depth of the peat opens up, at once revealing layers of phenols with gristy peat and and leather followed by medicinal phenols (carbolic soap) and a whiff of wood smoke. However, the sweetness of vanilla and the fragrance of citrus fruits are never far behind, maintaining the balance and intrigue. TASTE - An initial moderate and clean sweetness of deep peat notes, with tobacco smoke and strong espresso coffee, which then gives way to treacle sweetness and liquorice. The mouthfeel is firstly lightly spiced, then chewing, and mouthwatering and full, finally drying. FINISH - Long and smoky. A smoky sweetness is left on the palate, with a crushed peat and sweet-malted cereal character." The first time I ever tasted the 10 year I immediately fell in love with the peat and the toffee richness that accompanied the power and complexity of the spirit. Non chill-filtered 54.2% abv. 1990 Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist Islay Single Malt Whisky (Was $139.99) 750ml
($105.99)
There is a dark place on Islay, high above the Ardbeg Distillery, called Airigh Nam Beist (pronounced "arry-nam-bayst"), which in Gaelic means "shelter of the beast." No more fitting name could have been bestowed on such an eerie place; this is where - legend has it - something other-worldly lurks, lying in wait. So what measures can be taken to protect local and visitor alike? If you find yourself straying this way, then pray equip yourself with that traditionally reliable antidote to sheer terror - the stiff drink. A travelling man could ask for no better protection than a hip flask full of the strong stuff, namely Ardbeg's Airigh Nam Beist. For it's truly a wee beastie of a dram. Due to its greater age, it has a softer, more rounded flavor than the Ardbeg 10 year old . It shows a creamy, smoky flavor with hints of fennel and pine nuts. Aged in ex-bourbon oak barrels. 46% ABV and non chill-filtered. This took my breath away, with its rich vanilla notes and dried fruit mixed with smoky meat flavors. Elk Cove Vineyards is one of Oregon’s oldest and most respected wine producers, founded in 1974 by Pat and Joe Campbell. 92 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Dense and chewy, but with a nice lift of acidity and freshness as the finish rolls in, framing the cherry, blackberry, coffee and smoke flavors as they linger expressively. Best from 2011 through 2018." (07/09) One star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "7% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc. All analogies to Merlot here are strictly intentional. There is rich, somewhat gentle character and the openness of Merlot fruit to this wine, and it is better off for it even though some will ask where Cabernet's tough side has gone. Not us, however, because the likeable red cherry fruit and light, creamy oak create their own charm and make the wine a delight to drink right now." (08/09) And, according to Stephen Tanzer: "Good deep red. Oaky redcurrant dominates the nose. Supple, sweet and easygoing, with round, oak-driven red fruit flavors." (Nov/Dec '08) A great buy for under $20! This approachable Cabernet is a great pick for a user-friendly, every day Cab! 90 points Wine Spectator: "Very polished, with a suave mocha note weaving through the crushed red plum, raspberry and boysenberry fruit, backed by a spicy note on the velvety finish. Drink now. 500 cases made." (08/09) The Ca' de Calle is a blend of Malbec, Bonarda, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This kitchen sink style blend is made in the vein of Sean Thackrey's Pleiades or Owen Roe's Abbot's Table, it just happens to be from Argentina. The wine is loaded with black fruit flavors, spice box aromas and a subtle, smoky finish. It's nice to see all of Mendoza's best varietals working in conjunction together. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood) 2007 Durigutti Malbec Mendoza
($12.99)
90 points and a Smart Buy, Wine Spectator: "Quite ripe and toasty, with a hefty dose of mocha and coffee laid over the fleshy dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit. This stays toasty through the finish, but it's well-integrated, with the fruit an equal match. Drink now through 2010." (Web only, 2009) I was quite taken with this Malbec for its impressive display of classic varietal character: dark fruits, particularly blackberry, with a wonderful violet flavor providing lift on the mid-palate towards the finish, as well as the mineral component which good old vine Malbec all too seldom displays. It is a terrific expression for very little money. Starting with the 2007, winemaker Giampaolo Motta has decided to forgo using Sangiovese in the Giorgio Primo blend entirely, increasing the wine's already-impressive power, but also significantly decreasing production. Vibrant and rich, this is a phenomenal wine any fan will want in their cellar. Don't wait.

($52.99)
97 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Dark and brooding, with intense aromas of lead pencil, blackberry, black cherry and licorice. Full-bodied, with velvety, polished tannins, followed by vanilla, berry and currant on the finish. Powerful and complex. Built like a brick house. Best after 2013." (10/09) 91-94 points Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Giorgio Primo (from barrel) is 50% Merlot, 40% Cab Sauv, 10% P Verdot aged in 100% new oak with frequent batonnage. It is a big, rich wine loaded with vibrant dark fruit, violets, graphite and minerals, all of which come together in a richly-textured, sensual style. The wine possesses great balance and is very promising at this stage. This is a very Bordeaux-like Giorgio Primo. Proprietor Giampaolo Motta is one of the most passionate, driven producers in Tuscany. Seemingly never content with his wines, he continues to ratchet up quality in a meaningful way. The 2007 vintage brings with it a few significant changes, first and foremost the elimination of Sangiovese from the top of the line Giorgio Primo. Motta has never been fully satisfied with the way Sangiovese ages, so he has opted to use all of his Sangiovese in the entry-level La Massa, and use only his finest Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot for Giorgio Primo....it is only a matter of time before prices increase for Giorgio Primo, so fans of this wine will want to give the 2007 special consideration." ($19.99)
93 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Côtes de Tablas is a sensational wine as well as a great bargain. The fact that it is finished with a screw cap may give some consumers the wrong impression, but this is a serious, mouthfilling red. A blend of 50% Grenache and the balance equal parts Syrah and Counoise, it exhibits sweet, gamy notes along with plenty of pepper, licorice, roasted herb, blackberry, and cassis characteristics, a velvety, lush texture, a full-bodied richness, beautifully integrated acidity, abundant Provencal typicity, and good minerality for a wine of such remarkable flavor depth. Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years." (08/09) Tablas Creek, a partnership between Robert Haas and the Perrin family of France's famed Château de Beaucastel, has been at the forefront of growing and producing top-notch Rhône varietals for more than 20 years. Their "Côtes de Tablas" blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise is an homage to the wines of the Southern Rhône kissed by the California sun. The 2007 vintage is fantastic and alluring from the moment you pop the cork. Lead by bright red cherry aromas underscored by hints of iron, game and fresh cracked black pepper, the bouquet translates seamlessly to the palate, which is fresh and spicy with a vein of anise that weaves itself through to the finish. Like other Perrin wines, this medium-bodied beauty is built for the table. Try it with braised short ribs, grilled hanger steak with shallots or bucatini all'Amatriciana. Between the Festivo, an Argentine gem made by Bordeaux powerhouse Michel Rolland for only $11.99, and the unbelievable, affordable examples from the up-and-coming Ribera Sacra region of Spain (the darling of wine critics like Eric Asimov and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate) by Pena Das Donas, you can see why. But these wines simply need to be tasted to be believed. 2004 Monteviejo "Festivo" Malbec Mendoza, Argentina
($11.99)
91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Monteviejo's entry level wine is Festivo, a 100% Malbec aged for 6 months in new French oak. The 2004 Festivo is dark crimson-colored with a fragrant nose of mineral, spice box, blueberry, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, it is plush on the palate with plenty of ripe, forward fruit, light tannin, and a sense of elegance. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 5 years. It is an outstanding value. Bodega Monteviejo, owned by Catherine Pere-Verge (also the proprietor of Pomerol's Le Gay), is located at the foothills of the Andes, next to Vista Flores, south of Mendoza. The globe-trotting Michel Rolland is in charge of winemaking." (12/07) That's right, the international winemaking superstar Michel Rolland makes this wine, and where you would have to pay tens, even hundreds of dollars to experience his expertise elsewhere, here you can do it for a few bucks more than a couple gallons of "regular" gasoline. With campfire aromas giving way to stratified black tea, eucalyptus and cafe con leche, this is not necessarily the most bombastic Malbec out there, but that is exactly why I like it so much. There is something about the juicy, expressive nature of this wine that I love. Full of black fruits like plum and blueberry, this has sort of a pliable nature that most Malbec-based wines can never claim. Add a bit of earth and spice on the lasting finish and this seems just undeniably drinkable. (Bryan Brick, K&L) 2007 Pena Das Donas Almalarga Godello, Ribera Sacra, Spain
($16.99)
90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Almalarga, is named after the vineyard from which the Godello grapes are sourced from 70- to 100-year-old vines. Aged on its lees for four months, it is medium straw-colored with a superb aromatic array of mineral, crushed stone, lemon-lime, white peach, and melon. This is followed by a dry, elegant, ripe, concentrated wine with outstanding balance and length. Drink it over the next four years. Pena das Donas is a new estate in the high risk, high reward DO of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia where the steepness of the vineyards makes Sonoma’s Jackass Hill Vineyard look like a pool table." (02/09) 2007 Pena Das Donas Verdes Martas, Ribera Sacra, Spain
($16.99)
Produced from 100% Mencía grapes, the '07 Pena Das Donas Verdes Martas should turn lots of people on to the amazing red wines of the steep, slate-filled Spanish D.O. known as Ribera Sacra. On the nose, a combination of blueberry and red raspberry fruits also shows some French oak, no surprise as this is a relatively youthful wine. These aromas carry over to the palate, which is where the real magic of this wine begins to reveal itself: The fruit shows amazingly fresh, intense and flavorful, all while retaining a degree of subtlety and grace not often seen in a red wine of this price. Very mineral and a touch floral as well, this beauty is what a Ribera Sacra wine is all about, and should serve a wonderful introduction to the fantastic wines of this quickly emerging D.O. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer). Parker called the '06 Cantemerle "a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux.." and the Wine Spectator says the '06 Lynch-Bages "shows outstanding purity and balance." We thought these wines were worth the price even when they were more expensive. Now they're simply no-brainers for the Bordeaux fan. 2006 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
($29.99)
90 points Robert Parker: "As I indicated last year, quality has improved dramatically at this estate, and the 2006 is a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux displaying a dark ruby/purple color, a lovely bouquet of forest floor, sweet cherries, cranberries, and black currants, medium body, a textured, sweet, tannic mouthfeel, and a long finish. Everything is beautifully pure as well as perfectly balanced in this outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Excellent value.." (02/09) K&L's notes - 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot. At Joanne-boysenberry nose with spice. Full bodied. Harmonious. Good sweet finish. Lovely wine-better than 2005. At UGC-elegant style. Complete and round. At the property-cinnamon spice and some clove hints. Very fine aromas that lead to the palate. Long and deep on palate. High acid, delicious. A sure "sleeper of the vintage" and much better than their 2005! *1/2 Ralph Sands: Wow! Very special wine made here in 2006, surely the best in modern times. Spicy ripe fruit with fine middle richness, sweetness and mouthfeel. Alex Brisoux: Sweet, spicy red fruit, cocao/tobacco undertone, good structure, elegant long finish, the best young Cantemerle I’ve ever tasted. And on 01/23/09: as good as it gets for the price. Rich and full, lingering finish. 2006 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
($49.99)
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Year after year, Lynch-Bages is able to produce sumptuous wines, typically rich, powerful and structured. This is solid, the blackberry ripe fruit enveloping this structure with a velvet sheen. This is developing into one of the successes of the vintage." (03/09) 92 points Robert Parker: "1988 or 1995-ish in style, rather than 1996, which seems to be the vintage several 2006s recall, this dense purple-colored wine displays sweet notes of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, and some cedar and graphite. The wine has plenty of structure a la 1995 and a backward, muscular personality, but beautiful fruit on the attack and alluring purity and a nicely textured mouthfeel. The finish suggests cellaring for 3-5 years and drinking over the following two decades." (02/09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Blackberry, licorice and mint aromas lead to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and lots of blackberry and mineral fruit character. Shows outstanding concentration and balance. Best after 2014." (03/09) 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "Deep ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of inky cassis, licorice, mocha and smoky, nutty oak. Fairly large-scaled and layered but dominated by its acid/tannin spine in the early going, displaying firm, coolish flavors of black plum, licorice and graphite. The lingering finish features substantial but ripe tannins. Give this at least a few years of cellaring..." Want even more 2006 Bordeaux? According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006s are big, full-bodied wines loaded with super-ripe fruit, but with plenty of stuffing underneath...The 2006s will be tempting to drink young for their opulent fruit, but the best wines have the potential to age gracefully for many years."

($39.99)
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a vibrant, focused wine that flows with the essence of dark fruit, minerals and flowers. The wine possesses gorgeous length and proportion, all of which is framed by powerful yet well-integrated tannins. Simply put, this is a superb Chianti that also happens to be one of the best relative values in fine, age worthy wine. The Rancia is made from vines planted on poor soils at 420 meters above sea level. In 2006, the Rancia spent 16 months in French oak, of which 60% was new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026." (08/09) According to Wine Spectator: "Sweet berry and perfume on the nose. Full-bodied, with silky, refined tannins. The attractive finish is subtle and fruity. Drink now." Dark cherries, tobacco, herbs and minerals come together in this brooding, weighty Vigna del Sorbo. Today the wine comes across as completely closed and folded in on itself, but with time it should emerge as a beauty. The elegance of the superb 2004 seems missing, and this looks to be an especially concentrated vintage for this wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Here are two of our current faves: 2006 Castle Rock Columbia Valley Syrah
($9.99)
Voted one of the "Top 100 Best Buys of 2008" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Somehow, this California winery manages to put out the best budget Syrah in all of Washington State. Pure varietal, this excellent bottle brings clean berry fruit, natural acids and moderate tannins into play, with none of the bizarrely sweet vanilla and tobacco flavors that typically show up on Yellowtail wannabes. This wine just wants to be what it is--affordable, juicy and nicely representative of the higher acid, food-ready flavors of Washington state grapes." (12/31/2008) The Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine called the Castle Rock Syrah a "Good Value," writing: "The folks at Castle Rock have done it again in providing a deep and impressively filled wine at an altogether extraordinary price, and, if a touch quiet in terms of varietal spice, its combination of continuous berry-like fruit, sweet oak and real palatal polish makes it a remarkable value that should not be missed. Its easy manner invites drinking now, yet it will not be harmed in the least by a bit of age should you choose to buy it by case." (07/09) The thing that first tipped me off to the fact that this could be a special value was the nose, full of fennel, black peppercorn and fried sage this really struck me as being a very varietally correct Syrah. That honesty is echoed on the palate with a continuation of the spice notes and a big layer of tangy boysenberry fruit that is simply delicious. (Bryan Brick, K&L) 2006 Creta Roble Ribera del Duero, Spain
($12.99)
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Roble is sourced from a single vineyard at 850 meters of elevation, the highest vineyard in Ribera del Duero. The wine was aged for 4 to 5 months in French and American oak. Purple/black in color, the nose reveals cedar, mineral, damp earth, and assorted black fruits. Powerful on the palate, this tannic, structured effort has superb depth and grip and should evolve for 3-4 years." (08/08) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Complex bouquet displays raspberry, blackberry and an exotic blood orange quality. Fresh and spicy, with lively red fruit flavors, good mineral snap and no obvious tannins. An elegant and precise wine that offers excellent clarity and finishing sweetness. And a solid value." (Sept/Oct '08) This is a "mystery" crianza bottling, which basically means that a very famous winery's fruit source was used to produce this impressive entry level wine. 70-year-old Tempranillo vines are responsible for the intense, fleshy, dark fruit here. The wine is showy, maybe even a bit flashy, but representative of the best Ribera del Duero has to offer for a nominal charge. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer) Definitely on the richer side of Tempranillo, but by no means too heavy. This is still a heartly little wine with black plum flavors, Asian spice box and red currants. There is a touch of sweet oak and bramble that gives this wine a classic feel. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Even tasted blind, this excellent Cab's smooth, velvety-clay feel says 'Coonawarra.' It's a restrained, balanced wine with pencil eraser and red plum fruit flavors, and cherry brightening the finish; even still, it's the texture you'll remember." (12/04) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar listed this wine at $23 and had this to say on its behalf: "Medium ruby. Varietally accurate scents of cassis, cherry skin, licorice, hot asphalt, cigar box, eucalyptus and peppermint. Firm, tangy and tightly structured, with redcurrant and fennel notes on the palate." According to the Wine Spectator: "Supple and appealing for its gentle balance, with fine tannins surrounding ripe currant and dusky, earthy overtones, finishing with just a touch of sweet vanilla from oak. Drink now through 2008." If you're in the Southern Rhône it probably looks, smells and tastes like a wine from Domaine Grand Veneur. Robert Parker says: "This estate, owned by the Jaume family, has been on fire over the last decade. The wines are made in a polished, civilized, modern style, but they do not lack Provençal or Châteauneuf-du-Pape typicity." From affordable Côte du Rhône to sublime CdP, you won't want to miss these wines. And believe us, they won't last long. 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur "Champauvins" Côtes du Rhône-Villages
($16.99)
91 points Robert Parker: "The top Cotes du Rhone, the 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Les Champauvins, is a serious effort that could easily be mistaken for a Chateauneuf du Pape. Sweet black cherry fruit, seaweed wrapper, licorice, pepper, and spice aromas are followed by a wine with a broad, savory mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and a long finish. It should drink well for 4-5 years." (10/09) Grand Veneur's "Champauvins" is always one of my top picks for those seeking a Châteauneuf-du-Pape-esque wine without the accompanying $30-plus price tag. Broad and expansive, with beautifully fine tannins and a nice thread of underlying acidity, the 2007 Champauvins pulls its all off, despite its prodigious 15% abv. Garlic-studded roast leg of lamb? Grilled sirloin steaks with fresh herbs? A hunk of salami? Anyone? (Mulan Chan-Randel, K&L Wine Merchants) 15% abv. 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape
($34.99)
91 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre from 65-year-old vines) is an exceptionally strong effort. Aged in tank (80%) and small oak barrels (20%), it is a dense, full-bodied wine revealing an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, blackberries, and cassis. With a sumptuous, layered, full-bodied texture, sweet, velvety tannins, and zesty freshness as well as acidity, it should drink well for 12-14 years." (10/09) 88-91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright purple. Exotically perfumed nose displays scents of fresh blackberry, white pepper, incense and potpourri. Lush and creamy on the palate, with sweet dark berry flavors supported by slow-mounting tannins. The peppery note repeats on the focused, brisk finish." (Jan/Feb '09) 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur "Les Origines" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
($49.99)
96 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 20% Syrah aged in small new oak barrels) is somewhat of an anomaly with such an amount of new oak, but it never seems to show given the wine-s concentration and richness. This may be the estate-s finest example of this cuvee, which generally represents 1,200-1,500 cases, all from their holdings in the northern sector of the appellation. A saturated purple color is accompanied by aromas of smoke, camphor, creme de cassis, licorice, and blueberries, amazing concentration, a full-bodied texture, and a stunningly long finish. The tannins are present, but silky, and the vintage-s freshness and vibrant fruit are evident. Powerful and loaded with substance, but at the same time endearingly elegant and ethereal, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15+." (10/09) 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque purple. Pungent aromas of blackberry, blueberry, incense and potpourri. Offers brighter red fruits on the palate, with sweet floral pastille and smoky mineral qualities adding complexity. Becomes more energetic on the sappy, precise, very long finish." (Jan/Feb '09) 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
($74.99)
95-97+ points Robert Parker: "The newest baby, the 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, is a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. All of these wines are from the estate's three major holdings in the northern part of the appellation, on the high plateau of Mont Redon and Cabrieres, and in the northeastern sector, near Beaucastel. The 2007 Vieilles Vignes represents the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Inky/purple to the rim, with extraordinary full-bodied aromas of roasted porcini, meat juices, blackberries, cassis, smoke, and grilled herbs, it is intense to the point of almost over-extraction, but it has no rough edges. It possesses great purity, an amazing texture, and a massive, full-bodied finish with noticeable tannin. Because of its high percentage of Mourvedre and Syrah, it requires 6-7 years of bottle age, and should keep for 30-35 years." (10/08) 92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated purple. Stunning bouquet of mineral-laced raspberry, boysenberry and potpourri, with a strong note of licorice emerging with air. Deep and sweet but energetic, showing powerful red and black fruit flavors and a strong underpinning of graphite and iron. The boysenberry note recurs on the finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and long." Some super craft distillers have come up with interesting and delicious takes on what absinthe should be. None has been more impressive to me than the Germain Robin Absinthe Superieure. While the base spirit for absinthe is traditionally brandy distilled from wine, Crispin Cain used the Ukiah-based alambic still where he learned to make the renowned Germain Robin brandy line-up (arguably the best brandy produced in the US, if not the world), and used it to distill an apple-honey mead instead. He then threw in the traditional wormwood, but also included rose geranium and a few other aromatic devices, and then he distilled it to an untraditionally low 90 proof-far less than the 120 proof most absinthe sees. The result is a softer, more mild-drinking spirit that still packs a ton of flavor. While most absinthe is greenish, the Germain Robin is almost clear. Not being a traditionalist, I'm not bothered by that, but the spirit does cloud up like a true absinthe should when water is added. Best of all, it comes in a half bottle, so if you're looking for the most economical choice for your home bar, this is it. So far I haven't found very many places carrying it, so I'm happy to be leading the charge. (David Driscoll, Spirits Buyer) Germain-Robin Grappa Of Zinfandel 375ml

One of the most amazing spirits of any kind I have yet tasted. This is not Italian-styled grappa with the heat and the power, in fact, I'm hard pressed to believe that this grappa even has alcohol in it! The flavors of the Zinfandel grape are so fragrant and apparant on the nose that it seems as if the glass is full of red Zinfandel wine and not its distillate. The grappa is so soft, smooth, delicate and flavorful that I find it difficult to even call it grappa. This is not just for spirits enthusiasts. This is a beautiful work of art that everyone must try at least once. Very much worth every penny of its price tag. (David Driscoll, Spirits Buyer) Germain-Robin Liqueur de Poète 375ml

Yet another in the Germain Robin line-up of small batch, craft distillations that absolutely blows my mind. A wonderfully interesting, intriguing and delicious spirit distilled from pears and aged over seven years in barrel. A true labor of love for Hubert Germain-Robin who worked on this eau-de-vie for 16 years! The result is an exotic and stunningly complex spirit that shows barrel spice, port-like caramel and toffee notes, pear sweetness, and a sherry-like finish. One of the more amazing spirits I have tasted and one I am so proud to be carrying and recommending for our customers. If you thought that the Germain Robin XO was the best domestically produced brandy in existence, you would be wrong, but I wouldn't blame you for thinking so. In fact, I thought the same thing until I recently tried their Single Barrel Brandy distilled from 100% Pinot Noir. It is, in my opinion, without a doubt the best brandy in their arsenal. This has an absolutely stellar nose that shows the rich barrel aromas of age, but also the soft red fruit of the Pinot Noir. The palate gracefully shows red fruit and spice with as soft and delicate a profile as is imaginable. It might be THE great brandy of my short tasting experience. This will give any fine Cognac a serious run for its money. (David Driscoll, Spirits Buyer) Germain-Robin Single Barrel Viogner Brandy 750ml

($139.99)
Germain Robin's brandies are California's, if not the nation's, premiere craft-distilled brandies. This Single Barrel brandy made 100% from Viognier is in a class all its own. Very rare and very difficult to get, this spirit shows the floral and fruity character of the Viognier grape on both the nose and the palate. The zesty peach flavors are very soft as is the texture of the brandy itself. It is a major accomplishment for Germain Robin in their quest to produce the very best spirits possible from their Ukiah Alambic pot still. I can't tell you all how excited I was after getting a taste of Lance Winters's Basil Eau-De-Vie. It is very, very, very good...as long as you like basil. The Aqua Perfecta is an extraordinary feat of distillation artistry and showcases yet another stong offering in the St. George portfolio. Distilled from several types of basil, including Thai basil (which is very apparant in the nose), the palate shows a peppery spice and subtle hints of anise to acompany the graceful basil notes. I'm dying to get my hands on a whole bottle so I can try it in a Bloody Mary! This is a tough sell, I know (who is looking for basil-flavored brandy?), but rest assured people, this is worth every penny! A real adventure in alcohol artistry. We don't need no stinkin' Cab." 2006 Storybook Eastern Exposures Napa Zinfandel
($39.99)
96 points Wine & Spirits: "One taste of this wine and you might forget Cabernet. In fact, this is what Napa Valley growers should consider the ideal. It's classic, beautiful, wildly fruited Zin, farmed to catch the cooler, morning sun and to hold onto its zest and elegance. Made to be transparent in color and incisive in flavor. Pure California in its memory of sage brush and desert heat. Delicious now, and likely to be more delicious 20 years from now, as Jerry Seps's wines age with grace." 95 points and three stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "There is a sense of seriousness that is palpable right from the start here as the wine smells deeply of ripe, keenly defined berries, rich oak, sweet soil and spice, and both its wonderfully concentrated, multi-layered flavors and its very careful construction confirm that this is a special Zinfandel in every way. It eschews runaway ripeness in favor of absolutely classic varietal fruit, and it promises to grow in refinement and polish for five years and more." (09/09) Dr. Jerry Seps and family have been making great wine for many years, and, in fact, I think Storybook Mountain is the winery that started the Zinfandel craze. The wine is big and bold but unlike many Zinfandels of today, is still balanced with structure and spice. This wine can be drunk tonight but I think if you can hold it for 2-3 years it will be the best Zinfandel you have tasted in your life. "Chanty" found a couple pearls from the opposite side of the world… 2006 Aurum Pinot Noir Central Otago New Zealand (Elsewhere $26.99)
($9.99)
Wow - a lovely Central Otago Pinot for a great price. According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Matured in French oak for 10 months, the 2006 Pinot Noir is a little raw on the nose at first, herbaceous with a touch of green bell pepper and cranberry, but developing some attractive ripe cherry fruits with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, cohesive with quite sinewy tannins but a clean, focused finish with blueberry and cherry on the aftertaste." (04/08) $9.99...are you kidding me? This may be the greatest deal in Pinot Noir ever! The 2006 Aurum, which is sourced from all estate fruit, is made by the husband and wife team of Brook Lawrence and Lucy Pouthier-Lawrence. Brook studied in Australia doing stints in Alsace and Domaine De L'Arlot in Burgundy. Lucy did her schooling in Dijon and worked in Alsace, Nuit-St-Georges ansd Meursault. Together they have crafted a wine that offers smoky black cherry, dark strawberry, clove, forest floor and a light meaty note. On the palate there are soft fine tannins with good texture and a juicy mouthfeel leading to a long finish. (Jim Chanteloup, New Zealand wine buyer) 2006 Pegasus Bay Riesling Waipara New Zealand
($17.99)
93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Meanwhile the 2006 Riesling is a thrilling wine with touches of honeysuckle and limestone on the nose and a palate distantly related to the likes of JJ Prum or Willi Schaeffer. Although winemakers Matthew Donaldson and Lynette Hudson look as if they have just got in from an all-night rave, they are presently producing some of New Zealand’s most exhilarating, Burgundy inspired white wines, their reds suffused with earthy flavors. They are demonstrating the potential of the Canterbury wine region and constitute one of New Zealand's best producers. Their whites are exhilarating and seem best between a year in bottle and around five years." (04/08) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Peg Bay continues to push the ripeness envelope on its Rieslings. The 2006 is honeyed and rather sweet, with baked apple flavors at the core, surrounded by hints of spice and apricot. Lime-like acids seem a bit strident on the finish right now; give it a couple of years in the cellar." 93 points Wine Spectator: "Has a gorgeous mouthfeel, with a rich, velvety, mouthfilling texture that allows hoisin sauce, Turkish coffee, graphite and dark licorice notes to sail through the country: dense, Lengthy finish. Excellent Grip is well-embedded. Best from 2010 through 2030. 1,500 cases made." (04/08) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark red. Spicy strawberry and raspberry on the nose, with subtle garrigue, anise and dried floral scents adding interest. This is beautifully perfumed and sweet, with silky red fruit flavors and light, dusty tannins. Finishes with gentle grip and a strong echo of strawberry. An utterly classic rendition of Châteauneuf." (Jan/Feb '08) The 2005 Domaine La Barroche "Reserve" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. The estate has been in the same family since the 14th century, and is composed of 12 hectares spread over 12 well-positioned plots throughout the appellation. Careful fruit selection, minimal intervention in the cellar, and no new oak ensure that wines from Domaine La Barroche exhibit gorgeous levels of purity, richness and elegance. 15% abv. 2005 Domaine La Barroche "Fiancée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Was $89.99)

94 points Wine Spectator. "This has really nice drive, with a racy beam of raspberry and linzer torte pushing through the sweet mocha tinged structrue up front, while pushed by a mouthwatering minerality on the back end. There's a lovely raspberry and black pepper encore on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 550 cases made." 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Smoky raspberry and licorice aromas, with a complex array of garrigue, fresh flowers and spices building with air. Vibrant cherry and dark berry flavors are youthfully gripping and finely etched, becoming more tannic on the palate-staining finish. Very young and more brooding than the Pure; give it some cellar time." (Jan/Feb '08) 91+ points Robert Parker: "...the 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Fiancee exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color as well as an intense black cherry, black currant, smoke, graphite, and chocolate-scented perfume. In the mouth, it is very structured, formidably tannic, and backward. This wine needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years; it should evolve for 15-20." (10/07) 15% abv. Critic Robert Parker says: "...the wines continue to go from what were very strong efforts in the past, to even deeper concentration, complexity, and depth. All four cuvées are now routinely outstanding, with the top two offerings, the Cuvée Prestige and the limited production Le Secret des Sabon, compelling Châteauneufs."

90 points Robert Parker: "A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Cinsault from 50-year-old vines, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Olivets is a beautiful sleeper of the vintage. This sexy, full-bodied wine possesses a dark plum/purple color, abundant aromas of pepper, lavender, forest floor, and roast beef, a lush, layered style, and 10-12 years of drinkability." (10/09) 89-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby. Sexy, ripe raspberry and cherry scents, along with baking spices and woodsmoke. Smells like a New World pinot noir, and tastes a lot like one too. Sweet, palate-coating red berry flavors are enlivened by tangy minerals, with a subtle floral note on the back. Finishes with very good clarity and snap." (Jan/Feb '09) 90 points Wine Spectator: "An elegant, stylish version, with mulled red cherry and red currant fruit hanging gracefully through the tea-, sandalwood- and mineral-infused finish. Nice latent grip checks in at the very end. Drink now through 2019." (11/09) 14.5% abv. 2007 Roger Sabon "Reserve" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Intensely floral scents of raspberry, lavender, magnolia and garrigue Palate-coating red berry flavors are firmed by juicy acidity and complicated by smoky herbs and a sweet floral pastille quality. Finishes broad and precise, with supple tannins and considerable depth. This is one for the cellar."(Jan/Feb '09) 92 points Robert Parker: "Revealing a deeper, more saturated ruby/purple color, the full-bodied 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve exhibits plenty of glycerin, a multilayered texture, and a sensational combination of rich black currant and kirsch fruit intermixed with licorice, roasted herb, and forest floor notes. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault aged in both foudre and old demi-muids, it should drink well for 12-15+ years." (10/09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This is elegant, with incense and raspberry notes up front, followed by red plum, roasted vanilla bean and black tea. The finish is long and silky. A very perfumy style, with gorgeous mouthfeel. Drink now through 2019. 1,580 cases made." (11/09) 14.5 %abv. 2007 Roger Sabon "Prestige" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

95 points Robert Parker: "The brilliant 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige (60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and the balance almost every other authorized red grape of the appellation) is produced from parcels that average 90 years of age or older. It reveals the essence of Provence in its dense plum/purple color and powerful aromatics of sweet creme de cassis, black cherries, licorice, lavender, pepper, and incense. The wine possesses terrific depth, a blockbuster, opulent, multilayered texture, and a finish that lasts nearly 50 seconds. This sensational Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15-20 years."(10/2009) 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Powerful aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and dried flowers. Deep and chewy, offering lush dark berry compote flavors and slow-building tannins. Becomes sweeter and more lively with air, finishing with notes of fresh red and dark berries." (Jan/Feb '09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very silky, with nice deceptive depth to the perfumy crushed plum, toast, pepper and kirsch notes. A hint of shiso leaf extends the mineral- and red fruit-filled finish. Drink now through 2019. 1,012 cases made." (11/09) 15%abv. ETA: Early Nov 2009. 2007 Roger Sabon "Secret de Sabon" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
($214.99)
96-100 points Robert Parker: "Reminiscent of a hypothetical blend, stylistically speaking, of a 1990 and 1998, the opaque plum/purple 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon is off the charts. There are only 2,000 bottles of this limited cuvee, from a parcel of 100+ year old vines in the famed La Crau sector. Enormously powerful notes of grilled herbs, roasted meats, creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, and truffles emerge from this massive, super-concentrated 2007. A tour de force in winemaking, this is old vine intensity at its greatest and purest. Give it 5-6 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following three decades." (10/08) 95-98 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. A kaleidoscopic bouquet of raspberry, creme de cassis, potpourri, pungent herbs and incense. Smoky minerals add energy to deep, sweet red and dark berry flavors, complicated by candied lavender, rose and a suave anise note. The finish refuses to let go of the palate, where the sweet berry and floral notes echo. Boasts amazing freshness, depth and clarity." (Jan/Feb '09) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Silky, with a beautiful beam of kirsch running through pepper, incense, black tea and melted licorice notes. The long, supple finish has good latent grip, while maintaining its perfumy elegance. Drink now through 2020." (11/09) Looking for Châteauneuf-du-Pape to enjoy now? 2007 Suavia Soave
($12.95)
Listed in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008. 90 points and a Smart Buys designation from the Wine Spectator: "Lots of lemon, white peach and mineral character, with hints of orange peel and dry almond. Medium-bodied, with good acidity and a crisp finish, leaving a lingering citrus aftertaste. Racy, nervy and delicious. Minerally, almost flinty. Drink now. 6,000 cases made." (08/08) According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Suavia's 2007 Soave Classico shows the complexity and character of this hillside site in its ripe yellow fruits, smoke, earthiness and minerals. The wine was very closed and reticent at the outset so I recommend opening it 30 minutes before serving to give it some air. Alternatively a quick double-decant should do the trick. This is a generous, full-bodied style of Soave that is sure to find many fans. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010." (08/08) 2004 Bindi Wine Growers "Bundaleer" Shiraz Heathcote Victoria (Elsewhere $29.99)
($14.99)
92 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky ruby. Almost exaggerated aromas of creme de framboise, wild strawberry, blackberry, fresh violet and rose. Fleshy and silky, in an almost pinot way, with striking purity of red berry and candied cherry fruit. The finish is supple, sweet and deep, with mineral tones adding even more verve to this graceful beauty." (July/Aug '06) From one of the boutique, cult wine producers, the Bindi "Bundaleer" offers an elegant expression of Australian Shiraz. Coming in at 13.5 ABV the bouquet has notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, earth and a hint of that Heathcote ferrous/iron component. On the palate there are soft refined tannins with good acidity and a kiss of mocha that leads to a long juicy finish. A great wine, and a greater bargain. Grab it while you can! - Jim Chanteloup Australian Wine Buyer 2006 Tolosa Estate Edna Ranch Chardonnay
($16.99)
93 points and Editors' choice, Wine Enthusiast: "Tolosa's Edna Ranch Chardonnay is rich and crisp, always exhibiting exciting flavors of limes, kiwis and pineapples. Add oak barrels, and complex layers appear, of peaches and cream, vanilla fudge and buttered toast. All that, and the wine is entirely dry." (06/09) According to Wine Spectator: "A fragrant, delicate, medium-weight style, with green apple, spice and citrus riding a silky texture. Drink now through 2010" (07/09) One star and a "Good Value" designate from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Lifted in its aromas by ripe-apple fruitiness that marks it as solidly Chardonnay-like in character, this unoaked version is both clean and somewhat rich for its chosen style. Its early rounding on the palate is braced by firming acidity, and if things get a little quiet at the back, it is not surprising given its straightforward manner. " (12/07) This a winery that I have been a fan of for several years now because they produce high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Central Coast at competitive prices. Great anytime but especially in this slow economy. The 2006 Chardonnay is rich yet balanced with acidity and structure. Citrus, pineapple and apple with just a hint of butter and toasty oak. This is a couple steps up from a normal $16.99 Chardonnay. (Mike Jordan, K&L Wine Merchants) 2007 Chablis, Domaine l'Églantière
($17.99)
The wines from Jean Durup appear under several different labels, but are the same lovely, focused and mineral-driven Chablis. Fantastic Chardonnay in a totally different style than you will find from much of CA and Australia, and at a price that is quite appealing from this part of the world. Allen Meadows writes: "A slightly riper nose that also offers up green fruit but with oyster shell, iodine and a saline note that merges into rich, round and generous flavors that are delicious and forward yet there is firm supporting acidity. This too is lovely for its level and should reward 2 to 3 years of aging." (Burghound, 10/08) 2007 Château Paradis "Terre des Anges" Côteaux d'Aix en Provence
($24.99)
92-95 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Paradis is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grenache, and its dense purple hue is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of sweet new oak, blackberry liqueur, espresso, and a hint of spice box. This wine possesses amazing concentration, full-bodied richness, and a wallop of toasty, smoky wood. It should age effortlessly for 10-15 years." (02/09) K&L readers please take note: On the Robert Parker website, the review above references Tardieu-Laurent as the producer of the 2007 Château Paradis "Terre des Anges." In fact, Michel Laurent (who is more famously known as the owner of Rhône negociant Tardieu-Laurent) is not the producer or owner of Château Paradis. More specifically, Michel Tardieu consults with Château Paradis and their winemaking team in order to help the domaine realize exceptional and terroir driven wines. It appears that Michel's expertise and passion have paid off, given the exceptional quality of wines being produced past several vintages at Château Paradis. Albeit a bit confusing, the 2007 Château Paradis "Terre des Anges" as reviewed above and with the corresponding rating is not a negoc wine like those offered in the Tardieu-Laurent portfolio. Rather, it is a domaine wine that is grown, vinified and bottled at Château Paradis, and is therefore labeled as such. (55% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon) 14.5% abv. 2007 Redemption "Mission Ranch Vineyard" Monterey County Pinot Noir (was $50)
($29.99)
Here is a classic example of sensational Pinot from a talented newcomer that entered the market at the worst possible time. The wine rocks, but the market for new entries at $50 does not. Thanks to a special deal that we worked out directly with the owner, we now have this puppy at a fraction of the cost, with the savings passed along to you. This first release from the Wines of Redemption is an elegant 2007 Monterey County Pinot Noir. The fruit comes from the Mission Ranch in Monterey's Arroyo Seco AVA. Formerly the Mirrasou vineyard, the site, which borders the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA and shares its soil compositions and climates, now thrives under the management of Steve McIntyre. Enjoy cherry and cocoa powder aromas, great Pinot flavor and good acidity with just a hint of toasty vanilla spice. Don't over-analyze this one... just grab yourself a bottle and hurry back for the case purchase. 2007 Walter Hansel "Cahill Lane" Russian River Valley Chardonnay
($35.99)
94 points from Robert Parker: "The 2007 Chardonnay Cahill Lane has hints of caramelized citrus, white currants, honeysuckle, and tropical fruits (pineapple and orange blossom). It is full-bodied, with gorgeous texture, terrific mouthfeel, and vibrant acidity and purity. In fact, the striking component of these 2007s is the extraordinary fruit purity that seems to be found in all the top Chardonnays as well as other varietals...Moreover, the 2007s look to be a return to the brilliant quality of the wines produced here in 2005 and 2004." (12/08) 92 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light gold. Intensely spicy pear, white peach, Meyer lemon and white flowers on the nose. Gentle leesy qualities add complexity to powerful citrus and orchard fruit flavors, which gain sweetness with air. Finishes smooth and focused, leaving behind gentle cinnamon, clove and vanilla bean notes. Elegant enough to work with lighter seafood dishes but also has the concentration to handle richer fare." (May/June '09) 2005 Domaine La Barroche "Fiancée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Was $89.99)
($39.99)
2005 Lagrange, St-Julien
($59.99)
94 points Wine Enthusiast and a Top Wine of the Year: "The tannins dominate this dark, brooding wine. At this stage, it seems to have closed up, leaving the fruit and acidity buried. But with this concentration, the future looks promising. There is long aging potential here." 93 points Wine Spectator: "Currant, mineral, plum and light toasty oak follow through to a full body, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is thoroughly beautiful. Superbalanced and very pretty. Best after 2011." (03/08) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red-ruby. Reticent but sweet nose offers plum, black cherry, minerals and bitter chocolate. Thick and powerful but with excellent vinosity and sweetness as well as a slightly exotic character to the red fruit and spice flavors. Deep, slow-mounting wine that builds impressively on the back end. The tannins here make those of the 2006 seem a bit rigid by comparison. I was struck by the thought that Lagrange has done consistently well in the last three vintages, and that each effort is an accurate reflection of its year."
