Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

91 points from Robert Parker! -"The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve was sourced from a variety of vineyard sites in several AVAs. It was aged for 26 months in 100% new oak, a mix of French and American. Purple-colored, the wine exhibits scents of pain grille, scorched earth, black currant, blackberry, and licorice. On the palate it offers abundant spicy black fruits, chocolate, and mocha. There is plenty of depth and a long 45+ second finish. The structure is present for 4-6 years of further development in the bottle and it should provide pleasure throug... Read More »

Three years ago, our first ever Anderson Valley Chardonnay made its debut and was, in our estimation, the best Kalinda Chardonnay ever. That great producer of Chardonnay from my former neighbor has allowed us to put our label on a small quantity of their estate fruit, and it will become the greatest of all Kalinda Chardonnays. The 2006 Kalinda Anderson Valley Chardonnay is barrel fermented and is aged sur-lies for nine months. The aromas suggest that you are standing in a pear orchard, while in the mouth there is tons of structure, vibrant fruit that is ... Read More »

The 2005 Prisoner was listed as #17 in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2007 and awarded 93 points! This vintage of Orin Swift's "The Prisoner" is a blend of 51% zinfandel, 23% cabernet sauvignon, 12% syrah, 6% charbono, 6% petite sirah, and 2% grenache. At the recent new-release tasting event at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) "The Prisoner" was the subject of a lot of buzz, with the consensus being that the 2006 vintage was the best Prisoner that winemaker David Phinney had produced to date. Using fruit sourced from top vineyard sites, inc... Read More »

From the second label of Sobon estates comes Shenandoah Vineyards' full-bodied, full-fledged Amador-style zinfandel. A "Best Buy" from Wine Enthusiast: "With no oak, the pure, brilliantly ripe Chardonnay fruit shines through in this rewarding wine. It’s so rich in tropical fruit, peach, pear and citrus flavors, you won’t even miss the barrel influence. Best of all is the cool-climate crispness that makes the finish so clean and vibrant." (2/1/2008) Get naked! This chardonnay from Four Vines blends fruit from three vineyards in Northern Santa Barbara: Los Alamos, Loma Verde and El Camino. It's fermented in stainless and does not undergo malolactic fermentation, resultin... Read More »

You've heard it before;good values in California Cab are getting harder and harder to find. With prices for better known wines hovering around the $100 mark and lesser-known cuvées rarely coming in under $40, K&L has worked hard to find a great cab for less than $20 to offer you. While we've promised not to reveal our source, we can assure you that the 2006 vintage of Kalinda Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is top-quality fruit made by one of the Valley's most esteemed producers. Aged in 45% new and 55% once-used French oak barrels, the wine's toasty vani... Read More »

Alpen Cellars, established on a family ranch in the spring of 1984, is situated in a picturesque mountain valley at the foot of towering craggy peaks in the rugged Trinity Lake region of Trinity County, California. An accessible red dinner wine that has the mouth-watering aromas of smoky black cherries, tangy oak and white peppers. The flavors are suggestive of ripe cherries and cranberries. The finish is long and supple. It will enhance most foods such as pasta, chicken, all red meats and a wide array of cheeses.

90 points from the Wine Spectator: "While so many Napa wines soar past the $100 mark, John Buehler consistently delivers high quality Cabernets for a fraction of that price. The winery's estate vineyards at the base of Howell Mountain supplied 35 percent of this 2005, with the rest coming from non-estate vineyards on the valley floor. The estate fruit lends intensity to the wine, but winemaker David Cronin pursues a well-proportioned style, emphasizing balance and classic Napa aromas such as blackberry, cedar and mineral. Avalon makes only Cabernet, one dirt cheap wine with a generic 'California' name place, another, well...pretty close to dirt cheap Cab sourced from a variety of Napa Valley appellations. Just Cabernet, so it's lucky for them (and for us) that they handle this favorite grape so very well. The 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is silky and ripe, with layers of cassis fruit and just a smidgen of both oak and tannin. A great Cab to have on hand during summer BBQs!

A youthful and vibrant wine named for the Talbott family's youngest daughter, Kalin Hart. This is a second label for the winery, launched in 1999, showcasing the cool-climate influences of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The fruit for the 2006 vintage was sourced from the youngest blocks planted at the Talbott's River Road and Sleepy Hollow Vineyards. The wine's nose is playful, with notes of tropical fruit, fresh-cut grass and citrus. Lively flavors on the palate include pineapple, honeydew and kiwi, highlighted by the wine's zippy acidity. "An Editors' Choice" from Wine Enthusiast: "Though fruit-driven, forward and accessible, this surprises with the chewy density of its midpalate, and the depth and texture of the finish. It begins with somewhat sweet with candy flavors of raspberries, red currants and Bing cherries. Then it opens up, adding moist earth, minerals, flint and wisps of chocolaty smoke. Firm acidity and a balanced structure complete this classically proportioned and well-defined wine. An amazing 51,000 cases were made." (4/1/2008) This might be better than the 2005. Clear and ... Made from cool climate pinot noir, sourced mostly from Arroyo Seco vineyards (a smattering come from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey), the 2006 Poppy Montery Pinot Noir is full and structured enough to stand up to richer, meat dishes, but has the lovely fruit and acidity of a slow-ripened wine. "Deliciously bright and spicy Pinot from one of the coolest micro climate in California - Monterey!" says K&L's Jacques Moreira, "with intense and juicy ripe cherries, and 'soft-as-velvet' tannins. 94 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Compellingly sweet and densely packed, with lovely vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, cedar and minerals. Very fine-grained and very long on the palate, with the tannins perfectly buffered by the wine's material (May-June '06)" 94 points Robert Parker: "... We can't tell you the source for Kalinda's 2006 Napa Merlot, but suffice to say it comes from one of the Valley's preeminent family-owned producers of cabernet, merlot and chardonnay. Bright acidity and a complex and elegant bouquet filled with red fruit, mint, cherries and spice. Who says merlot can't stand on its own? This wine will bring you back into the fold. This is still young, so decant an hour before serving with a rustic beef or lamb dinner.

On the palate the wine combines butter and oak with layers of peach, mango and honey and a touch of mineral on the finish. With Poppy's pinot noir already a favorite among K&L staff, it's no surprise we jumped at the chance to bring in their California Cabernet. Born of a partnership between winemaker Eric Lauman and several growers, this value-priced wine gem is made from fruit sourced predominantly from Paso Robles, though there is also some from Sonoma County. Only 500 cases of the appellation-bending wine were made this year, so act fast!

92 points and an "Editors' Choice" from Wine Enthusiast: "A cool (growing region) has given this Chardonnay brilliantly crisp acidity, while ripening the fruit to perfection. Apricots, peaches, pearsand mangoes are the primary flavors, enhanced with rich, toasty oak." (Dec. 31, 2007) The 2006 vintage of Taz Chardonnay comes from fruit planted in three distinct and select blocks in Santa Barbara Canyon's Cat Canyon, where a robust canopy protected the grapes from the heat and sun during an unseasonably warm July. The Edna Valley appellation is located in San Luis Obispo, just five miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard sits in an unusual east/west-oriented valley, which funnels cool marine air inland, creating one of the longest and coolest growing seasons in the state. It's our pleasure to carry the 2006 vintage of Peter Hunken and Amy Christine's Hocus Pocus Santa Barbara County Syrah. Launched with the 2005 vintage, Peter and Amy have worked hard this vintage to produce another fantastic wine that's not too expensive, but doesn't hold back on quality or taste. Made from fruit sourced from meticulously farmed vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley, the wine's a bit gamier on the nose than the 2005 vintage and also packed with vibrant blueberry aromas. A great, domestic Rhône-style syrah for any wine-lo... 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' guide to California Wine: "Well-defined berryish fruit is the centerpiece in both the outgoing aromas and the full, fleshy flavors of this weighty effort, yet, for all of its volume and richness, it stays nicely on the varietal track with its background notes of dry spices and briar. It is youthfully exuberant and somewhat juicy in character, and it will be at its best in service with savory roasts of pork marinated in brine and basted with young port." This wine opens up with strong aromas of freshly cut green apple, melon and pear. A bowl full of tropical fruit salad (pineapples, bananas, mangos and papaya) is in there, as well as a hint of floral apple blossom. On the palate, the refreshing flavors of crisp apple and fresh citrus are balanced with an acidic component. The finish is fairly long considering that there was no oak used when making this wine. I really enjoy the lingering tropical fruit flavors of pineapple and banana.
