A fabulous Right Bank vintage and this wine is a true bargain in old and rare wines. (Clyde Beffa, K&L) K&L's notes - A ripe, sweet, and delicious wine with great balance. Comes from an appellation that's getting a lot of attention in '98. The property is just north of the center of St. Emilion. Easy to like, this wine has lots of toasty, vanillan oak aroma and sweet ripe blackberry fruit. Flashy style. Good value. 90-91 points Robert Parker: "The finest Grand Pontet yet tasted, the saturated black/purple-colored 1998 offers a knock-out nose of nearly overripe blackberry fruit, kirsch liqueur, licorice, smoke, and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with impressive equilibrium, this concentrated, deep wine will be even better after another 2-3 years of bottle age. It will last for 15-16 years. Impressive! Grand Pontet is undervalued in today's wine market, a rarity for Bordeaux." (04/00) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Black licorice and blackberry on the nose. Full in body and tannins, but soft and voluptuous. Long finish. A château on the rise." (01/01)
