1997 Niebaum-Coppola "Rubicon" Napa Valley Proprietary Red
*Cellar Selection* A masterpiece from this near perfect vintage. Completely ripe, classic and fresh, with oodles of red cherry and blackcurrant flavors that are generously oaked. Amazingly, the wine is still young and tannic. So beautifully structured, so smooth and polished, firm yet soft, just a gorgeous wine. Hold onto it until at least 2012, if you can.

No note given.
Mature and drying, with dried currant, anise, cedary oak and loamy sage notes that are complex and balanced, ending with fine-grained tannins. Best of two bottles.--'97 California Cabernet retrospective. (Web-2008)
The blend for the 1997 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. After replanting over half of the estate due to inevitable concerns like virus and old age, the 1997 harvest was limited to the foundation blocks of old Cabernet, the Garden, and the Gio vineyard for the 1997 harvest. The 12-acre Gio vineyard, planted in 1988, is consistently a major contributor to Rubicon with its sweet red fruit aroma and flavor. This vineyard is all about charm and it balances out the raw power of the Garden vineyard beautifully.
