The cabernet and merlot grapes selected for this wine came from Groth's two vineyard locations, the Oakcross Vineyard in Oakville and the Hillview Vineyard just south of Yountville. The grapes were hand picked in the middle of October as they reached maturity. The timing was perfect, and the early rain that characterized 1982 had no effect on the fruit. 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% merlot, with just 12.5% alcohol! Remember, this was when California vintners were going for elegance and finesse, not heft!
