 An old classic, but how do the newest bottlings fare? Rich, chewy, slightly oily texture. Deep peat, thick smoke, iodine, brine, charcoal, seaweed, tea (Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong), and the aromas of a summer barbeque. Vanilla and light caramel soften the intensity, while subtle citrus fruit teases. Powerful, yet polished and seamless. After all these years, this whisky is still one of the finest standard-issue peaty, smoky whiskies! (Vol. 20, #3)

Wine Spectator

 A fascinating turn on an essentially peaty Islay. The smoke offers a toasty element as it coyly introduces itself on the nose, with hard candy as a partner. The peat comes on with salt spray in the mouth, but once again gets quite candy sweet, with a bread dough core. On the finish the smoke fairly disappears for a while as you enjoy the delicate sweetness, masking the next wave of toast at the outer limits.  (2/ 2011)

Lagavulin was established in 1830 and has the driest start of all single malts. Full amber in color, with a dominant sherry nose. Full-bodied yet smooth. The dryness is offset by the sweetness of the sherry character. Salty notes and a huge powerful peaty finish. A connoisseur's malt, and with consistently high marks from late critic Michael Jackson.

Earthy, smoky, ashy, and underneath it all, sweet and chewy. I waited nearly a month and a half after opening the Lagavulin 16 to review it; I figured it would reveal itself over time, that this lion would lamb out a bit. Well. I agree that it is defiantly smoky (as Dave Broom says), like a hearth, with some caramel candy and smoked meats like, say, the Talisker 10 (aka the Precious...in my regard) on the tongue. Nosing is hot and spicy, and the finish is like hot smoke. Richer, with less thin, iodine character than some Islay single malts--maybe a hint of singed seaweed. A serious Islay at a whacky good price.

For my palate I'm not sure this single malt can be bested around its price point. It carries heavy smoke without being overpowering - and the complexity on the finish begs to know why you would spend more on lesser scotches. A first love for many scotch drinkers, but don't be surprised if you keep coming back to this bottle after you explore the multitude of offerings on the market around this price-point.

I love Lagavulin. It represents everything that Scotch whisky should be. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you can appreciate this special whisky from the magical isle of Islay, you're probably going to ended up a life long fan. A whisky to cut ones teeth on, you just can't beat Lagavulin for consistency and overall depth.

It's like you were on the beach on a breezy, balmy night, and made a campfire out of still-wet driftwood with seaweed clinging to it. Then you roasted a marshmallow that blackened and fell in the wood and you fished it out and ate it. Very delicious.

Brine, Peat, campfire wood, with faded burnt marshmallow in the back of your throat on the finish. All infused with a soft frame of iodine.
