1994 Scavino "Bric del Fiasc" Barolo
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 1994 Barolo Bric del Fiasc reveals a Chateau Margaux-like nose of violets, black currants, asphalt, and toasty new oak. In the mouth, it is deep, rich, and full-bodied, with the vintage's tell-tale silky texture, low acidity, and up-front, evolved personality. This deep, concentrated, layered, yet voluptuously-textured Barolo is already delicious.
This serious, modern-style Barolo has a fancy oak treatment that gives it lots of polish and elegance. Great balance defines this '94, as it delivers layers of toasted oak, spice, mocha, coffee mill, plum and blackberry notes, ending on a velvety--what else?--toasted, smoky finish.
Enrico Scavino is one of the great masters of Barolo. His single vineyard creations are legendary, one of only 10 producers who have been awarded "3 Bicchieri" 10 times or more. '94 was a difficult vintage but through careful selection Enrico's Bric del Fiasc is stuffed full of fruit and body. The wine just reeks of terroir and will reward aging for 8-12 years.
