2013 Domaine Renaud Mâcon-Charnay

Once in a great while, you find wine from the Mâcon so good that when tasted blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. This is such a wine. Domaine Renaud is a small domaine that produces Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, along with stainless for others. Compared to the Solutré, the Charnay is richer and more generous on the palate, with good power and weight. It is supple and charming, with some floral notes on the nose and a terrific finish. The Renaud Macons have been a staple at my home for weekday enjoyment for quite a few years now. The Charnay is always a bit more forward and rounder while the Solutre shows more rocky minerality. I also love the old vine Pouilly-Fuisse and have served it to many of my friends and relatives at more serious dinner parties. The Renaud wines always show great freshness, laser-beam focus and drive. Great values!

Best in class. This 100% Chardonnay from the Macon never fails to impress. Lovely weight and ripeness. Classic mineral and citrus notes. Superb value vintage after vintage.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds).
