This perfectly aged wine comes to us direct from Maytag's cellars.

After the last few years I think just about everyone has heard us pontificating about just how good, and how insanely inexpensive, the York Creek wines are. Luckily for us and our thirsty customers, Fritz Maytag kept deep cellars over the years and still has plenty of wine for us to sell. After the rousing success of the 1999 Meritage, which we sold almost 900 cases of, we bring two new wines to you from the fantastic 2005 vintage in Napa Valley. The 2005 “Sunny Hill” bottling is from one of the numerous single block sites on Fritz’s property high above the valley floor in the famed Spring Mountain District. Fritz told me that the reason he started making all the single block wines was that he really wanted to understand the differences of the blocks of the vineyard. From 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine was easily my favorite of all the single block wines Fritz let us taste on this go-around; sadly, we only have about 50 cases of this. The good news is that there plenty of other single blocks as well and all of them are tremendous in their own way. I thought this wine had the most complex and meshed nose of any of the wines we tasted from York Creek, with a lovely, seamless, masculine array of dusty berry fruit, cocoa powder, stone and a touch of olive. Still incredibly youthful and full of vigor, this wine could easily go another 10-15 years, yet is wildly delicious now with its recently maturing black-fruited ripeness, powerful yet ingrained tannin structure and lovely background notes of foresty evergreen and mushroom. This will certainly not last long and once those 50 cases are gone, well, they’ll be gone for good.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
