 A dark sheen of meat and spice sitting across this ripe dark fruited pinot that delivers a wealth of fragrance and almost citrusy, pomegranate tinges. The palate is supple, ripe and dense with a convincing middle palate fruit presence, dark spicy cherry fruit flavours abound and there's a faithful tannin undercarriage too.  (4/ 2014)

A spectacular new release from this stunning property in Central Otago. The "Black Poplar Block" is specially selected from and old block of vines and crafted with the upmost attention to detail. The wine shows a lovely interplay between density and power with elegance and finesse. This wine was a real highlight for me during a recent trip to Central Otago where the 2012 vintage is shaping up to be one of the greatest ever! Limited quantities available (Ryan Woodhouse K&L NZ Wine Buyer) GOLD MEDAL - 2014 San Francisco Int'l Wine Competition - June 2014. 93-95 Raymond Chan: "Fruit from the 'Black Poplar' block from vines planted in 1995. Hand-picked, aged one year in 33% new French oak. Very dark, deep ruby-red colour with light purple hues. The nose is tightly bound with refined and subtle aromas of black cherries, dark raspberries, dried herbs, oak spices and smoke. Medium-full bodied, beautifully elegant and refined, concentrated flavors of black cherries, dark red berry fruit, savory herbs and sweet spices form an intense core. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained extraction and balanced, fresh acidity, providing brightness and vitality, subtly enhancing the fruit sweetness. Detailed nuances of raspberry kirsch, oak and smoke emerge, and carry through to a firm, lingering finish of real finesse. This is a classically structured, elegant and refined Pinot Noir."

This is a seriously good bottle of wine and I would put it up against any $40.00 Pinot Noir we carry. This has earthy aromas of dark fruits and wild berries touched by herb and spice nuances. The complex array of red and black fruit flavors is followed by a schist-like mineral finish showing fine grained tannins and great length. The impressive depth is tempered by balance and proportion.

An excellent addition to our New Zealand Pinot stock! This one has a dark core of wild raspberry and grippy tannin. Racy and bright with a crisp edge to it; a perfect cool weather Pinot.

This is another top flight Pinot from Central Otago, and a new one in our portfolio as well. In fact, I was drinking this wine in downtown Napa five hours before the quake hit. So, it could have been the last wine I was to have drank in my glorious and wine-filled life. And that would have been just fine and without any regrets! The nose shows purity of fruit with dark plum and black cherry abundantly displayed with notes of earth and dried orange peel. On the palate, the wine is juicy, with good drive, structure and fine, supple tannins that lead to a long finish. Truly a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir.

This is a big, darker fruited, structured Pinot Noir. While it's certainly densely structured, there are also pretty floral notes, real fruit purity and an expression of place that even in an area as well regarded for PN as Central Otago, is not necessarily a given. Great Pinot Noir for a special occasion or for your cellar!

This Pinot Noir from Pisa Range is so delicious! This wine is very complex with floral notes such as rose petal and violet, dark cherry and raspberry fruit, baking spices, and minerals. The palate is both elegant with refined tannins, and zesty with medium plus acidity. The tannins are well integrated, which allows for this wine to drink well now, but the lively acidity will help this wine age beautifully.

From the world's southernmost winegrowing region comes an exceptional effort in Pinot Noir that is not to be missed. Violet, black cherry, plum, a hint of minerality, and an amazing texture. If you can keep your hands off it, this is a wine that will be doubly rewarding after a few years in the cellar. If you can't, give it a splash in a decanter, and then prepare to be impressed.

Profound Pinot. Very deep and layered. Starts out with its quite beautiful bright purple / red color and vivid hues. The nose is haunting with spiced violets, thyme, black cherry compote and crushed slate. On the palate the wine is rich and energetic. Layers of dark berries, black cherry, damson plum, and toasted spices. Under all of these flavors is a fascinating vein of raw minerality and slightly wild bramble character. Plenty metamorphic soil qualities showing here in flavor and texture. Despite being quite concentrated and powerful there is nothing heavy or highly extracted about the wines, it is not viscous on the palate but rather lithe and dynamic. This wine again shows the incredible quality to be found in the 2012 Central Otago Pinots. Many believe it is the best vintage ever for the region and after glass of wine like this I can see why!

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

- New Zealand is an extremely diverse wine-growing nation. The long history of producing wine started in the 1830s with wineries such as Mission Estate (1850) and Te Mata Estate (1896) still producing wine today. The two islands hold a multitude of different growing climates ranging from warmer areas such as Hawke’s Bay to very cool regions such as Waitaki, and Awatere. Most regions are defined as Maritime with the exception being Central Otago that has a moderate Continental climate with the high elevation creating dramatic diurnal swings in temperature. The plethora of grapes grown in New Zealand reflects this diverse microclimate make up. Everything has a place here, Bordeaux varietals and Syrah in Hawke’s Bay, Chardonnay and Pinot in Nelson, Pinot Noir and Riesling in Central Otago , aromatic whites in Waipara and pretty much everything you can imagine in Marlborough. New Zealand is also one of the “greenest” wine producing nations on earth (94% of wine certified sustainable in 2013) with a strong focus on organic and Biodynamic farming.
