2010 Cantina Terlan "Gries" Lagrein

This comes from a small suburb of Bolzano called Gries, where the alluvial soils are perfectly suited to Lagrein--a native grape that has been grown in the region since at least 1379. The fruit is manually harvested, slowly fermented in stainless and finished in mostly large wooden barrels (70%) and barriques (one-third new). Always a favorite, this cool climate red is ink-dark and packed with lifted dark berry fruit, fine tannins and exotic spice. It's particularly delcious with game, offal and aged cheeses.

The 2010 Cantina Terlan “Gries” Lagrein is a bold red. Lagrein is the varietal, and to me it most resembles a smoky Syrah, full-bodied with a firmer tannic structure. The 2010 is gorgeous to drink right now. I had this wine with some wild boar ravioli, and the gamey flavors went perfectly with the Lagrein. I’m sure you’ll love it too!

This Lagrein is made in the Alto Adige. This wine has an elegant perfume, subtle even, with fruit, vanilla and violet notes. On the palate it is a touch austere and quite full bodied, just the thing to match the rustic, rich foods of the mountainous region like lamb with rosemary and hard cheeses.

- This lesser known red varietal grown in Italy's Trentino-Alto-Adige is said to be a cousin of Syrah. It's made into intensely deep red wines that are at once broad and elegant, and most often labeled Lagrein Dunkel or Lagrein Scuro. It's also occasionally made into a rosé -Lagrein Rosato - but these are rarely imported into the United States. Characterized by dark fruit, chocolaty undertones, fresh herbs and good acidity that complements the varietals more rustic tannins.
