Connoisseurs Guide

 *One Star* There is plenty to like in the fruity, not-too-complex aromas of this well-ripened wine, and its juicy, melon-like flavors follow suit. It runs more to melons and pears with a subtle suggestion of oaky richness, and it is comfortably balanced with enough acidity to be lively without being ungainly or stiff. It ends with a bare bit of last-minute coarseness that will be lessened now by service with meals, and it looks to benefit from another six to twelve months in the bottle.  (10/ 2013)

 A straightforward, clean and well-made white, the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc offers up nice stone fruits, citrus and lemongrass aromas and flavors as well as a medium-bodied, supple and pure feel on the palate. Sourced from a small parcel of Sauvignon Blanc on their estate Jardine Vineyard, Vina Robes delivers a fantastic value again from this fine 2012 harvest. Grapes were picked in the cool morning hours and very gently pressed into stainless steel for a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine remained on the lees in stainless steel tanks with no malolactic fermentation in order to enrich the texture while maintaining aromatics and brightness. A nose of guava, passionfruit, and grapefruit introduces a pure and crisp palate which reverberates the tropical fruit notes with mineral and a cleansing finish.

Vina Robles is regularly seen at K&L. A winery with quality wines at fantastic prices. Everything produced by Vina Robles is from their estate vineyards. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Jardine Vineyard, which is a 280-acre vineyard planted between 1997-2000. The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is a clean, crisp white with lovely acidity. Citrus, stone fruit a hint of richness in the mid-palate gives this wine a lovely mouthfeel.

With its alluvial sandy loam soil, good drainage and excellent exposure, the Jardine Vineyard possesses ideal conditions for growing crisp and flavorful Sauvignon Blanc, and this affordably tasty version reveals why Paso Robles has become the new California hotspot for fine wine cultivation. Tropical fruits from guava to passionfruit, highlighted by lemon and grapefruit "citricality" and a touch of minerality perform a lively dance number upon the palate. A lovely, versatile wine for parties and summer picnics with family and friends. Cheers!

Here's a wine designed to beat the heat! Aromas and flavors of lemon meringue, pineapple cream, and lime citrus are present and generous. Accompanying them is a refreshing dose of acidity to keep things crisp and lively. This is just a flat-out good value for $10.99. And if it sells as well as the Vina Robles 2010 Cab Sauv did, we won't have it for long.

The Vina Robles Jardine Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc starts off with aromas of lemon, lemon grass, and a dry, wicker-like note, before a subtle honeydew melon aspect reveals itself. While plush and round in texture, only a sliver of aforementioned melon pops up on the palate, and there is plenty of tart acidity sitting behind it, keeping the overall impression light and fresh. Probably the best inexpensive domestic Sauvignon Blancs I’ve crossed paths with recently.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.
