2010 Scali "Kalkis Vineyard" Pinotage Paarl

SKU #1170030

Hand-harvested from the organically farmed Kalkis Vineyard in Paarl. Tiny clusters of pristine Pinotage fruit is carried in 20lb hand-crates directly to an open top wooden fermenter. Fermentation is slow and with entirely native or wild yeasts. The wine is basket pressed and put to French oak barriques (20% new) for 20 months. The wine is then bottled completely unfined and unfiltered. Only 250 cases were produced in total. The wine is highly perfumed of ripe red berries, baking spices, rose petals and raspberry liqueur. The palate is wonderfully soft and supple with ripe tannins and lush texture. It finishes fresh with just the right amount of acidity to balance the riper elements of the wine. Surely one of the finest Pinotage offerings that we have come across.

Quite possibly the best Pinotage I've ever tasted. This mountain vine beauty has loads of cassis and blackberry flavors that cascade into pepper spice. It is ripe and full with a hint of tobacco, and completely lacks the Pinotage stink that is usually associated with the grape. This is what Pinotage is capable of if planted in the right place!

This is hands-down the finest expression of this varietal I have ever tasted. This smells like a clean, classy N. Rhone Syrah with its sweet, dark raspberry fruit, spice and iron minerality on the finish. This is sophisticated, perfectly proportioned and delicious. If you hate Pinotage or love Pinotage or have never tasted Pinotage, do yourself a favor and try this tonight.

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
