2012 Losada "Pajaro Rojo" Mencía Bierzo

SKU #1166569 91 points Wine & Spirits

As meaty as a southern Rhône red, this mencía is black, ample and soft. A delicious wine and a beautiful snapshot of the variety as it grows in Bierzo, this comes from vines between 30 and 40 years old." (10/ 2013)

Wine Spectator

This expressive red shows black cherry and herbal flavors, with a slightly gamy undertone. Not big in structure, but has drive, showing light tannins and lively acidity. Drink now through 2018. (12/ 2013)

K&L Notes

The Pajaro Rojo is produced from Mencía grapes in predominantly clay soils west of León. Interestingly, the Losada family believes very strongly in the quality of these heavier clay soils, as opposed the to the prevailing notion that slate based soils create superior wines in the region. Given the high quality of the fruit and a judicious four months in French oak barrels, this is a tasty, freshly fruited Bierzo that seems to have just the right balance of juicy fruit and complexity, all over a supple textural frame. It is a delicious, well made example of a region that should continue to get more attention for its excellent terroir and potential to produce very good, unique reds.

Big and juicy, a touch jammy even, slightly herbaceous, and a great price! Serve this slightly chilled and serve throughout summer.

This is as tasty a young Mencía as I have had from this region in quite some time. It is soft and approachable, with supple dark cherry fruit, and an overall balance that suggests something between medium weight, juicer Pinot Noir and mid-weight, fruit forward, gently spicy Syrah. There is a minerality and sense of balance, however, all its own, and something tells me that for those willing to experiment a bit, they will find in this wine great personality, individuality and value. Highly recommended!
