Ardbeg Auriverdes Limited Edition Single Malt Whisky

SKU #1164298

In the realm of what is now a bi-annual certainty -- these limited edition, get-them-while-you-can, special release bottles -- Ardbeg has almost always reigned supreme. They've brought more intensity (the Supernova), they've brought extra spice (the Alligator), and they've even played around with cask finishing (the Galileo). The thing about Ardbeg, however, is that their whisky is already perfect how it is, so why mess with perfection? Why tweak it or finagle with it? Why not just celebrate it? That's what this year's Auriverdes is all about -- a celebration of the 2014 World Cup with a new, softer, more supple version of its peaty goodness. Inspired by the Brazilian flag (Auri - gold, Verde - green), there's nothing weird or new going on with this whisky, just impeccable execution. It's also a whisky of green peat and golden oak with big, bold smoke and a soft mocha finish. The 49.9% proof intensifies the spice, but the vanilla wins in the end. More important than any of the marketing, however, is the quality. This is the best new Ardbeg in years -- period. No tricks, no gimmicks. Just good. That's reason enough to celebrate. Showing the expected notes of iodine and peat on the nose, on the palate this is surprisingly subtle and poised. Clearly an Islay, but not one that tastes as if it were filtered directly through the peat. Poised and delicious, it reminds me bit of the old Ardbeg, back when they hand-malted the barley on site, but in a more poised configuration.

Wow, this is the most stunning Ardbeg I've ever tasted. The nose and palate have all of the wonderful smoky and spicy characteristics you would expect from Ardbeg but with a brilliant, almost elegant style that is hard to resist, and finishes off with a wonderfully long vanilla note. This is a spectacularly complex whisky somehow brilliantly weaving together both boldness and finesse. Bravo!

Ardbeg seems to get things right more often than not. They are one of my favorite distilleries because they have proven to me that they know what they are doing. Instead of looking at a special release with an air of hesitation, hoping that it is good, I look forward to these releases because they are always darn good. This is no exception though it is different than the usual in your face Ardbeg. The Auriverdes takes you on a walk to richer side of Islay. Golden hued with beautiful smokey vanilla, buttercream and a lovely toasted finish. Plenty of peat to be sure, but there is a suppleness and depth to this Scotch that wraps you up in your favorite blanket.
