2013 Kir-Yianni "Akakies" Rosé Amyndeon

SKU #1163798

This vibrantly hued rosé of 100% Xinomavro is laden with juicy strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors with pretty floral highlights. It's fruity, refreshing and well-balanced, making it the perfect wine to enjoy chilled on its own or along with a variety of foods, from Mediterranean-inspired cuisine to vegetarian dishes and Asian fare. The winery's notes: "Inspired by the Acacias grown around the Xinomavro vineyards of Amyndeon, this is the only Greek PDO rosé. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 700 meters within the viticultural zone of Agios Panteleimon, in the Amyndeon Appelation in Northwestern Greece, the only Greek AOC for rosé wines. The vineyard’s mean yield does not exceed 40 hl/he. The soil is sandy and poor, thus offering the possibility of producing wines of exquisite quality and rich aromas. The...region is characterised by cold winters and warm summers, while the four neighbouring lakes contribute to the existence of a mild continental climate. Akakies is the final blend of two winemaking techniques: 85% of the must comes from skin contact grapes and 15% from 'saignée' of grapes to be fermented for red wine. Grapes are kept in cold rooms to achieve temperatures between 11 and 14ºC."

The Akakies has a nice dark pink color that is very inviting. It is full bodied with nice fruit but is very dry. Spice flavors help round out this delicious and fun wine.

Greece

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
