 Very spicy, full-in-the-mouth wine. It has just the right amount of acidity to keep it fresh, but its main thrust is towards rich pepper and weight. At the end, a tighter mineral character appears. Keep for 2–3 years.  (10/ 2013)

K&L Notes

This organically grown Pinot Gris is harvested mostly from the Glintzberg vineyard in Bergbieten, which is essentially the same terroir at the more famous Altenberg Grand Cru (its exposure is just more east-facing than the south-facing Altenberg). This is a classic, dry Alsatian Pinot Gris, with aromas and flavors of pear and tropical fruit accented by nutty notes and subtle spice. Fleshy and unctuous, this wine shows excellent weight and richness in the mouth, but its lively acidity lifts and lengthens the finish, keeping everything in balance. Super food-friendly, this has the nuance to complement delicate fish and shellfish dishes, but the body to match the heat of spicy fare.

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.
