2013 Sigalas "Aa" (Assyrtiko/Athiri) Santorini

 The 2013 Aa is a blend of 75% Assyrtiko and 25% Athiri. (Remember that "Aa" is simply the new name and packaging for the familiar blend Sigalas marketed as Asirtiko / Athiri for many years.) There are times when I think that this is one of the more underrated wines on the island, always showing persistence and high personality while remaining fresh, reasonably ageworthy, aromatic and sunny. If it is never as rich and concentrated as the big boys, it always seems livelier, more fragrant and transparent. Its personality tends to make up for the lesser power. This is a nice year for it if you like what it does best -- the transparency and the sunny, fresh feel. Revel in the purity here this summer and over the next several years. They have demonstrated to me that they tend to age better than most suspect, but unlike the typical big boys from Sigalas, they can be completely enticing and ready this year, too. Drink now-2020. A combination of Assyrtiko, with its inherent layers of structure and power, combined with the small addition of the bright lift and aromatics of the Athiri is really a knockout. A very bright aromatic of rich citrus and that one of a kind volcanic minerality, which can only be found on Santorini, gives this wine a refreshing character from start to finish. Plenty of juiciness on the palate with expressive length and a happy finish that has verve and identity. This has a certain restrain that can only come from a true master of their craft. Drink nice and chilled on its own or, with chilled fresh fruits and veggies. A killer with fish dishes too! (Eric Story, Greek Buyer)
