 Bright straw. Pungent, spice-accented citrus and orchard fruits on the perfumed nose. Offers silky, light-bodied Meyer lemon and green apple flavors that show very good clarity and a bracing kick of candied ginger. Expands nicely on the clinging finish, leaving white pepper and quinine notes behind. I get none of the herbal character that's so common in most unoaked California Sauvignon Blancs, or the Chardonnay-like qualities of most barrel-fermented renditions.  (5/ 2014)

Even within the realm of wine geeks, there are, well...geeks. This sorta different, growing cult success producer with crusader label has rolled the multi-sided dice on Sauvignon Blanc, and mind you, are no wine nerds--the stats for TA on this wine are listed as "perfect," and the RS, "where Mother Nature intended it to be." With this musque clone Sauv Blanc, they've just begun their adventure, and don't mind saying so: "This is the first time that we have made one but are pretty excited about the way it turned out. So excited that we are making it as a special bottling. Don’t think of this wine so much as a fruit bomb our a candy explosion but rather as a textural adventure. Where Sauvignon Blanc can be lean, Musque is structured. Where Sauvignon Blanc is lemon, Musque is more tangerine-lime-grapefruit. Round and robust this 50% neutral barrel, 50% stainless steel fermented wine is unexpectedly rich and creamy on the palate with subdued citrus aromatics tinted with slightly savory tones."

A delicious, crisp Sauvignon Blanc of the quality of a very good one from the Loire Valley in France. BRAVO! This is made from the clone brought in from Bordeaux in the early 1960s, which Doug Meader at Ventan discovered did not get those vegetal notes in a cooler climate. So, this shows none of that vegetal quality that this varietal can sometimes exhibit, and is a wonderful wine. It's summer, and this wine will quench your thirst and brighten your spirits. But only if you are wise enough to buy some.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.
