 A spectacular offering from Jumilla, Casa Castillo’s 2012 Monastrell (100% Mourvedre aged six months in neutral French oak barrels) comes from old vines and yields averaging between 16 and 25 hectoliters per hectare. It exhibits notes of black raspberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, a dusty, chalky character no doubt from the limestone soils, and a medium-bodied, ripe, rich, concentrated mouthfeel that lingers in the mouth. It is nearly impossible to find a wine at this price with such intensity and richness. Buy it by the case and enjoy it over the next several years.  (11/ 2013)

 (aged for six months in older French oak): Deep ruby. Complex aromas of red berry liqueur, cherry pit and floral pastilles. Smooth, expansive black raspberry and cherry compote flavors are energized by tangy acidity. The floral note recurs on the finish, which features silky tannins and a late note of cracked pepper. A beautiful wine, the 2012 Casa Castillo Monastrell starts off with an intoxicating nose of wild berries, baking spice, dried plums and herb. The palate is awash in ripe red fruit, dusty tannins, licorice and subtle mocha notes with good acidity and admirable balance. The 2012 Casa Castillo is a stunning value that hits on all cylinders with a fruit-driven palate and a surprising amount of complexity for an under $10 bottle of wine. Big juicy, black fruit, concentrated and powerful, with nice acidity and soft tannins. This will make an excellent BBQ wine or a great base for a summer sangria.

Mourvedre

- Also called Monastrell and Mataro, Mourvèdre is most famous for the ruby-hued wines of Provence's Bandol region, known for their spicy, gamey, blackberry character, though the grape is grown throughout Provence and the Southern Rhône. Thought to have originated in Spain, it is second only to Grenache in vine acres, with the best examples found in Rioja, Alicante and Penedès.
