2012 Envinate "Lousas" Vino de Aldea Ribeira Sacra

SKU #1161757 Jancis Robinson

Mid crimson. Delicate redcurrant fruit with an attractive smoky/dustiness. Dry finish. Very delicate and low in tannin and, especially, acidity for such a young wine. Most distinctive. Friendly and fruity but doesn't actually taste all that Atlantic! (4/ 2014)

K&L Notes

Envinate was founded by four young winemakers-to-be who teamed up after studying enology in Alicante. The name means "wine-yourself," and although thoroughly contemporary in their outlook, their focus is on exploring the "ancient, Atlantic-infused terruņos of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands," according to the importer. "Their philosophy is simple; let each parcela or single parcel fully express itself by utilizing old-fashioned farming and wine-making methods." This includes foot-stomping and whole-cluster fermentations in small vats, bottling directly from the barrel! Open a bottle to an Iberian adventure.

A great nose of hard ground spices, clove, anise, nutmeg and sandalwood leads you into polished dark berries, purple fruit, plum and even blackberry. There is cedar, and cigar box also. A complex wine that keeps revealing new elements with every sniff. On the palate it is vibrant and dynamic. Mid-weight with plenty of structure but nothing too astringent. The wine broadens and picks up density towards the back end as more layers emerge. A rich and layered wine focused into a remarkably elegant package. Another standout Ribeira Sacra from a recent tasting.
