Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A spectacular value from Portugal, the 2011 Altano is a 5,000-case blend of Touriga, Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. It offers abundant fruit along with a meaty, beef blood-like component, excellent purity and ripeness, medium body and attractive spice and earth notes. There is a lot of wine for the price in this delicious, supple red from Portugal. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. The Warre's-Symington reputation is, of course, based on their ports. These two inexpensive offerings are well-worth their modest prices. (RP) (2/ 2014)

Wine Enthusiast

** Best Buy ** A forward, fruity wine that shows ripe black-currant fruit. It does have the structure that comes from the tough soils of the Douro, but this is balanced by the acidity, juicy fruitiness and ripe tannins. Drink now. (4/ 2014)

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds. Click for a list of bestselling items from Portugal.
