2013 Waterkloof Circumstance "Cape Coral" Mourvedre Rosé Stellenbosch

Following in the footsteps of the great rosés of Bandol, the Waterkloof's Circumstance Cape Coral rosé is made entirely from Mourvedre sourced from some incredible old vines in Stellenbosch. Grapes were hand-harvested and a gentle whole bunch pressing extracted only the best juice. No further maceration of the juice with the skins was allowed. Naturally occurring yeast was allowed to ferment the juice which took 5 months to complete. The wine was then left on the primary lees for another 2 months to add further complexity before bottling. The Cape Coral rosé shows a lovely pale salmon color. Delicate aromas of peach, spice and herbs are prominent on the nose. Though dry, the palate offers considerable body and texture because of the extended time the wine spent on the lees.

Zippy, fresh, and tasty, this is one of my favorite rosés in the store. Bright but round and complex, with lifted flavors of light strawberry and a bracing mouthfeel. This will give Bandol rosés a run for their money.

Mourvedre

- Also called Monastrell and Mataro, Mourvèdre is most famous for the ruby-hued wines of Provence's Bandol region, known for their spicy, gamey, blackberry character, though the grape is grown throughout Provence and the Southern Rhône. Thought to have originated in Spain, it is second only to Grenache in vine acres, with the best examples found in Rioja, Alicante and Penedès.
